I have a 402BB and the existing 14" flywheel has some stress cracks and probably needs to be replaced. If I buy a new flywheel does it need to be balanced with the engine or are 402's internally balanced?

cc,
402's are internaly balanced. You should not have any problems. You might want to take the flywheel to a machine shop and try resurfacing it. Usually just grinding a few thousanths off takes care of the stress cracks. We have found that they are usually not as deep as they look. Might be worth a try.

Thanks Bill, I will do exactly that. Always helps to save a few bucks. I thought about buying an aluminum flywheel but from reading previous posts looks like most feel that BB should not use them.

Bill's right, have it resurfaced, $25. Good as new.
Yes 402s are internally balanced and have a neutral balanced flywheel.
