: LSx engine install questions....

Hey guys, what all do you need to get to put an LSx style engine with either a 4L60E, or a 4L80E into an old car?

I'm talking wiring and PCM/fuel management, not the basics of the install such as headers and brackets.

One more question, could I change the stock exhaust manifolds to headers without having to do a custom burn for the PCM?

Thanks in advance,

That is kind of a loaded question but you can mod a stock LSx harness You could run headers without a custom tune, however, you will probably want to eliminate the rear O2 sensors, vats, change gearing in the rear end. You will need some kind of aftermarket electric speedometer or use a cable-X speedometer drive(what I am using). You will also need to consider a fuel system like a Spectra EFI or Rick's tank. One thing you could run into is that the stock A/C compressor location will require relocation or frame notching. Also you will require a steam tube or bypass to the upper radiator hose. I know I am leaving something out. You can check around on LS1tech in the conversion and hybrid forum or check out Stealth71 and his build thread. I have a thread going but I am no where near done. I have HPtuners to do my programming but I am no expert...yet.

Kwik makes some brackets that will move the a/c compressor to the top. Mine just came in a couple days ago. Spendy for what they are, but they look nice and appear to be well-crafted. Motor is not here yet so cannot comment on fit.

Thats nice to know, I'm not quite to that point, but I need to do away with the PS pump and install the A/C compressor. My build is going in a 33 Ford kit car, and all I need is the Alt and A/C, along with the water pump and crank pulley. Do you have a link to the Kwik stuff?

I know the new Holley EFI that is in the last few threads is capable of plug and play on the LS stuff as well as run the trans.

Check with DougF here on the Forum. He can clue you in.

You could use Holley's new EFI with that engine/trans but if it is stock I'd just run the factory PCM. Headers would be no issue for the stock calibration.

I agree, plenty including myself have run headers on a LS motor without a retune and no problem. Yes you are leaving some power on the table but you will not destroy your motor.
