Hello readers,

I have a problem with my Chevelle and I am running on empty with ideas of what to do. Hopefully I can get some help or ideas from posting. Thanks in advance.

What I have:
1972 Chevelle
350 ci small block chevy
Modified QuadraJet Carb.
Mallory HEI distributor
Mallory Hyfire 6a CDI Igntion Box
Newly installed generic electric fuel pump
Holly fuel regulator.
700R4 trans.

The problem I have:

The car, for a long time, has been running smoothly without issue. But last Friday something happened suddenly. I should note that on this day it was raining and hailing, though just cloudy when I started it up to leave work. I drive maybe 100 feet and it stutters then stalls. I was low on gas so I figured I just neglected to put enough fuel in, gauge said I had a little but I put more in anyway, no change. It cranks just fine, but that is about all it does. If I let the car sit then try again occasionally I would get a single sputter of the motor then nothing.

I looking around for other possible issues and here is what I have done so far. I aired out and dried the distributor, inside the cap and in all the boots. I rebuilt the carburetor. Checked all my electrical connections and tested my ignition box. I wasn't getting any signals out of the box so I replaced it. After replacing the box I got it to sputter a few times and had it running a few seconds. It ran very rough and with low rpm. I gave it a little gas and it back fired then died. I have been able to get it to sputter a few times since but not running and it mostly just cranks.

I am unsure of what this issue could be right now. I could really use any help and insight you may be able to provide, I would be happy to hear anything you have to say or ask.

Thanks a lot for reading.

Not sure why all my text is blue and underlined, oh well.

Were you getting any power to the ignition box?

Do you have good fuel pressure to the carb, through the filter?

Is there spark at the plug?

What do the plugs look like?

The ignition box is getting power, both constant from the batter and switch power from the ignition. Both wires going to the appropriate places.

I am unsure of the fuel pressure since I have no gauge. I do know the carb always has fuel. Though whether it is too much I am unsure.

I regapped my spark plugs a few weeks ago and all was well. I haven't pulled any since this happened though, maybe I should.

I wonder if you ought to be looking in to what fried the first ignition box.

The probable cause of the first box being fried was water from all the recent wet weather. There were signs of water entering the box.

The old box is 6-7 years old and worn from the years of me tinkering and restoring my ride. I wouldn't have been surprised if it had gone out on it's own. But given the conditions, and the signs, water was most likely the cause. I have been following the wires and checking power since this happened and have found nothing out of the ordinary from the box, to the parts, to the firewall. I won't say I am 100% sure that is what killed the box, clearly something is up, but all the signs point to it.

Can you wire around the box completely and fire it off of with the HEI?

it does? I was wondering what was going on. I tried rewriting the post but it was still coming up with blue lines and hyperlink signs, I thought it was a glitch. Well what the hell?

About rewiring the box, I am not sure I can do that, since my distributor no longer has an ignition module in it, the box replaced it.

Got an old distributor laying around, or one you can borrow maybe? Junkyard? It might be a far fetch, but it will rule out a few things if it works.

I wish I could, but I do not have such access. No scrap yards around either.

I have a question though. What do you guys think about the coil being bad? Mine is a few months old but that doesn't mean it can't be the cause. Could something have fried it? Would a bad coil do this do you think?
