Does any one have a recommendation for an orginal ac compressor that has gone bad? I would consider having it rebuilt or purchase a substitute. Does any one have rebuild resource recommendation? Fast turnaround is a plus..

It was charged with R134 and worked pretty good for about 2 seasons. it is installed on a BB 69 Chevelle that is mostly stock.

Perhaps there a better compressor to use? I would hope to keep this as stock looking as possible.

Thanks in advance for any help / advice...

Randy:)

Old Air Products (http://www.oldairproducts.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=8390) is a site sponsor with their new Pro6Ten A6 replacement. They now offer them in black, too.

Try Classic Auto Air in Tampa. They are local for me. They do it all and have a large inventory of parts from the 50's, 60's and 70's. Curtis is the man to contact. Their number is 813-251-2356. Good luck. Jerry

I really really appreciate all your help...Thanks I will contact them for tech information.
I'm interested in finding out what kind of advantage there would be in switching to the style of compressor vs versus rebuilding my original GM unit...any hints???

There's no real operational advantage that I've found. Both compressors will work very well in your original system.
A6- About 20% more displacement than the Pro6Ten. More robust than the modern replacement.
Pro6Ten- Only about 2/3 the weight of the A6, if that. More reliable shaft seal design. Somewhat less power consumption (I don't recall the actual figures).

Basically,
The A6 is more durable (built like a tank) and has a bit more "overhead". This can be a factor in very arid climates, especially with R134a. There is a modern shaft seal available to replace the old, oil slinging ceramic seal.

The Pro6Ten is lighter and consumes less power. The clutch design is also better suited for "cycling" systems, such as a system with a POA eliminator.

Which compressor is "better" depends on what you are looking for. I prefer the A6 on original POA systems, but the Pro6Ten is an excellent replacement for the admittedly heavy and dated design of the A6.
The price of a Pro6Ten and a NEW A6 is very close.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again for your help.
When you say A6, are you referring to the original GM unit or something else? I am not up to speed on the correct terminology and just want to be clear. Thanks for your patience with my ingnorance...and laughing at me is quite acceptable, especially if it brings you some joy..

I don't see any ignorance, unless you mean that you are ignorant of the fact that your original compressor is a Frigidaire/Harrison Model A6. That just means you didn't know. I'd certainly never laugh at you for that type of ignorance. :beers:
