Just put my new Cragers on my 70 SS. 15x8, 4 1/8 backspacing, with BFG T/A's 275 60 15s. There is about a half inch between the sidewall and the inner 1/4 lip. They may even rub in situations with a lot of flex or a sharp turn up a driveway. Close! I may have to roll the lip a little but I hate to with these new 1/4s and wheelhouses.

Yep, I'll bet its close! Usually with an 8" wheel you want 4.5" of backspacing - there's probably a ton of room between the tire and the frame. I run a 15x10 with a 295/50-15 on my '71 with no rubs and I have more room between the tire and lip than you do because I used 5.5" of backspacing.

Good to know that it is doable with 4 1/8" though. Thanks for telling us!

Do either of you have any close-up pictures of your wheels/wells handy? If possible I'd like to see how both setups look. If not, thanks for the numbers and info!

I have a 70SS with old el-camino springs in rear. Sits low and people are always thinking I have some trick set up in the rear. Anyhow, I have 15-8.5 rims with 28 x 12.5 tires. I trimmed the inner lip of my new quarters to match the chrome wheel well trim and re-caulked same. You would never know it. No bent over lip, no way for anyone to question otherwise.
