Just completing the installation of a 454 in our 68. We have a 168 tooth flex plate with a TH350. I bought a stock staggered bolt starter from AutoZone and the flex plate was hitting the end of the nose cone where the starter gear rides. We then switched to a mini starter and now the gear on the starter doesn't even come close to engaging with the flex plate. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?

are you sure your flywheel is facing the correct way.if not it will move the ring gear in wrong direction. greg

I am assuming it is correct. It has several areas that appear to be recessed for the 3 legs of the torque convertor to bolt into.

IIRC the torque converter should be bolted on a pad not in a recess. There should also be a dowel pin on the crankshaft so the flexplate can only go on one way to insure the balance weight is in the correct position.

X2, the converter bolts onto 3 raised pads, not recesses. Sounds like the flexplate is installed backwards.

Joey,
First thing you need to do is count the teeth on the flexplate. It is either 168 or 153 tooth. More than likely it should be 168. Then figure out which starter you need. You may have one of the oddball situations that need a particular starter to work properly. A picture would certainly be worth a million words.

Note the raised pad--not recessed--that the converter bolts to.

Just seperated the trans from the block. Flexplate is indeed on backwards and bent. Ordered a new one and will be here tomorrow. Thanks for all the help.
