: Need slightly narrower 60/15s
chadh5 Sep 17th, 02, 1:46 AM I have 235/60/15s on the front and 255/60/15s on the rear. This weekend I'm going to raid Dad's stockpile of T/As, so I need some help with some sizes. I want to go slightly narrower front and rear. I like the height. But the left rear rubs (all the letters are gone) and the fronts rub sometimes when I turn, and basically, I'm tired of both occurances.
Any suggestions on what sizes would be good for me?

DaleM Sep 17th, 02, 8:13 PM I got this from http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html . Select the ~standard~ and ~end~ radio buttons.
A 235/60x15 measures: sidewall of 5.6" and diameter 26.1"
A 205/70x15 measures: sidewall of 5.6" and diameter of 26.3"
A 255/60x15 measures: sidewall of 6.0 and diameter of 27.0"
A 215/70x15 measures: sidewall of 5.9" and diameter of 26.9"
The rear size will make your speedo 0.7% fast. Meaning at an indicated 60mph, you're really doing 59.6mph - assuming your speedo is accurate to .1 mph :*)

chadh5 Sep 18th, 02, 10:31 AM Thanks Dale, that looks like it will be helpful. Which number is the width of the tire though? My number one goal is for the back tire not to rub anymore...
EDIT:
Ok, how does this sound for sizes for the desired goal, yet still looking good. I probably should have stated the wheels too. Vette Rallies: rear is 15x8 and front is 15x7.
Front: 215/70/15
Rear 235/70/15 ( 245/70/15 would be better but I don't know if I can find that one.)
They will be a little taller, but that will probably be ok.

RAGTP66 Sep 18th, 02, 7:31 PM Chad I run 15x7 monte carlo rally wheels same look as your vette wheels with 275-60-15 rears and 235-60-15 front and no rubs anyplace. the rears are CLOSE to the wheel lip/wheel well trim ( you cannot get your finger between) but do not touch even with 2 people in rear seat. Does your car have the original 67 rear end? Mine has an oldsmobile type o rear end how THAT got there who knows I'm not sure how wide mine is from flange to flange. I also run air bags in rear springs but not much air in them 5-7 psi left and about 12 in right to eliminate wheel hop. Should be close to an inch narrower than later 68-72 and are the wheels originals or aftermarket with different backspacing? My tires are Kelly Springfield Chargers Sometimes different manufacturers vary a little bit.
chadh5 Sep 19th, 02, 1:12 AM You're not the white one that goes to Elmhurst on Wednesday's are you?
Just that left side rubs in back, especially with passengers. Like I said all the letters are gone off the tire. The rear end is a 68 I believe, thus wider. I've even ground down the inner wheel well. That helped but didn't cure. So I'm going to have to go with the 70s I think. My bushings all need replaced, but I don't think that would affect it much. The wheels are both Vettes, the fronts are '68s and the rears are '69 or 70.
RAGTP66 Sep 20th, 02, 12:50 AM Chad-
Nope my car is Aztec Bronze with bronze int and black top. License plates RAGTP 66 I don't get to hit the cruise spots much as I get out of work late. I pass through the Lemont show on Wed nites but its ending at 830-900 just when I get through there. Your not real far from me though if you want to meet up some time I'll let you try my combo and see how it fits. I'm usually off on mondays and will be on vacation the week of Oct 7-14. Will be at the Morris show on the 12th.Email me and I'll get you my number.

rollin_92gt Sep 20th, 02, 11:28 PM The reason for the oldsmobile rearend was because some chevelles from 65-69 had the olds rearend. If your rearend is 10 bolt it was built by buick, olds, chevy or GM of Canada. The rear ends by buick and olds are identical , the wheel bearings are pressed onto the axle shafts and are retained by a retaining plate. all other rearends have wheel bearings pressed into the axle tube and the axles shafts are retained by c-clips. Got this info from chevrolet by the numbers, 70-75 chevy's...chevelle, camaro, corvette, nova, monte carlo, impala and el camino. I hope that helps someone.
RAGTP66 Sep 21st, 02, 1:02 AM Do you have any idea what would determine when an olds rear was installed or is it sort of like the M-20 option where you could get either a saginaw or a munice depending on what the factory had on hand? My car does not have the rear frame reinforcement brackets which was something I thought came standard with a 12 bolt after a certain point in production.
Thanks Chris
BTW my rear has 12 cover bolts but 10 bing gear bolts.
chadh5 Sep 25th, 02, 12:12 PM Dad had the 215/70s but only 255/70s for the rear. So I brought em back and have them mounted. I'll put them on the car tonight. Dad says a 255/70 should be slightly narrower than a 255/60, so we'll see. They look the same to me.
chadh5 Sep 25th, 02, 10:27 PM CRAP! I knew it! It rubs worse now! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/mad.gif Guess I'll have to get out the ole charge card tomorrow, so I can still take my road trip this weekend.
chadh5 Sep 27th, 02, 11:16 AM The 235/70 did the trick. Just in case you were wondering. On the edge of your seat, I'm sure. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif
chadh5 Sep 30th, 02, 10:46 AM Bad news. With 2 extra people, tools and bags, the tire is rubbing again, and so the letters are all gone from my nice new tire. Guess I'm going to have to dig up 2 more '68 Vette 15 x 7s. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif Or get a another 15x8 and have the offset changed for that side. I'll have to look into the cost on that.
