I have a 65 SS with a 454 /350turbo 12 bolt.
What is the biggest tire I can get in the back and what backspacing? Want 15s and I have already trimmed the inner lip to give me another 1/2 inch clearance.

By trimming the rear wheel lip, you can probably fit 275s with no problem.

I have the following combination on my 65 El Camino. All four rims are the same size 17X8 with 5" backspacing. I have 1" clearance between the wheel lip and 3/4" on the inside for the rear combination of 255/45R17 tires and rims. The front tires are 235/45R17 and I have minor rubbing. It only rubs when the tire is at full turn lock and is pushed up into the wheelhouse. It rubs on the bottom of the wheelhouse, so no damage occurs. I would make one change on the front, I would use 17X7 with 4-1/2" backspacing rims to cure this rubbing issue. This would move the tire in 1/2" and not affect the inside clearance. I have the stock width 65 axle and have lowered the rear 1/2" and the front is lowered 1" with Hotchkiss springs. On the front, I have 72 power disk brakes which move the wheel out by a 1/4" form the stock position.

I had set of wheels made for my old 64 Elcamino, the rears were 4.625" on an 15x8 inch wheel. Tires that fit were 28x9 et drag's and 26x12.5 sportsman pro's and sit perfectly centered 3/8" on both sides. The Sportsmans rubbed when hauling stuff the wheel houses up inside the aren't as big http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif Front wheel b.s. was 2.625" on a 15x5 inch rim for that depth look. (I hate the way skinnys look on all sunken in with overhang) The 15x5 looked perfect with a 165/sr/15 Kumo tire.

I run 275/60R15 with no modifications other than good body bushings and a centered body. If you shave the lip, you should get 295/60R15 or similar.
