: Radial T/A Alternative? - That Handles
rick Aug 23rd, 02, 11:14 PM I'm looking for a new set of tires. Size 235 or 245/60/15 . The TA's I have are OK, just looking for something different with a bit more traction. These have been installed for 7 years & I don't need a tire to last that long. So a softer tire compound is in order.
What brands/lines (in above sizes) are available? I'm aware of the Cooper Cobras, Firestone Firehawk SS20, Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 (choice so far) and Hoosier. Thanx

pmullaly Aug 23rd, 02, 11:45 PM Rick take a look here Tire Pros (http://www.tirepros.com/)
The American brand are actually made by Michellin(sp) You might have to step up to bigger rims. Just Plz no "DUBZ" http://www.chevelles.com/forum/rolleyes.gif
They looked like they had good traction and wear numbers when I was in the store.
I'm with you I think the BFG's are a thing of the past

Scratch the cobras. They wear like stone, and have a wear rating of 440. You might be looking for something more in the 200 range. Try www.tirerack.com (http://www.tirerack.com) and input your size - and play around a little with other sizes. 16" would give a MUCH greater selection of sport tires.

rick Aug 25th, 02, 8:58 PM Thanx Phillip, Nat.
As I look at whats available, I'm realizing that I need to go bigger for what I want. Right now that is not possible, so it will be one of the Firestones, Yokohama Avid S/T or Goodyear Wingfoot.

Glenn1018 Aug 25th, 02, 9:10 PM I checked TireRack and went with Yokohama Avid S/T's, only on the back as I haven't gotten to the front yet. They're cheaper and have the highest handling rating by consumers, whatever that's worth. I put the white letters towards the inside for obvious reasons. The black sides have this funky design on them, but I've gotten used to it. I can't comment on the performance because the car's just recently progressed to being driven in the driveway.
wanarace Aug 25th, 02, 9:27 PM If you want something that handles then go with a H or V rated tire. Thw Pirelli Scorpion Zero comes in a 255/60/r15 for 85$ from the tirerack.

rick Sep 13th, 02, 2:20 AM Just to close this out, I mounted Yokohama Avid S/T yesterday. OWL out -for obvious reasons http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif . 245/60-15 front and rear on 7" rally wheels. I like the way they look. I only drove it a short distance ( http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif Found a leaking rear wheel seal) but for sure 1- they are much quieter than the BFG Radial TA. No road whine. 2 - They seem to stick a bit better, very subjective and hard to quantify in a short drive. The BFG did have 60K miles on them so the comparisons may not be fair.

Glenn1018 Sep 13th, 02, 4:24 PM Rick, I'm glad you like them. I ran a bunch of searches here and at the Camaro site and couldn't find much feedback at all on Avid S/T's. I too was dissatisfied with BFG's, and honestly think their popularity is due to marketing and magazines, not performance.
Ken K Sep 13th, 02, 11:25 PM The problem with the feedback on some of those tire sites is any idiot who does not have a clue can say the tires he bought are the best thing since sliced bread. The reason they have the codes on the tires is so the consumer has some kind idea on what the tires will do. There are not really that many different tire manufactures, some tires are the same with different names on them. The problem with the Tire Rack is that it is mail order, what happens if you have problems? If you buy the tires from a chain most will include free lifetime rotation. Americas Tire Store and Discount Tire are every where and they honor the warranty anywhere and the tire rotation anywhere, they also have free mounting and balancing. I had to buy a set of tires a few months ago and I was surprised at the info I found on the net.
