: Coy's C5 - Flange machined down???
Mr.350 Apr 27th, 10, 5:40 PM HI -Just got my new 20" Coys' C5 wheels today - (71 chevelle SS) bought them from a wheel and tire dealer here in Denmark - (Europe).
I ordered 8 1/2x20- 4,75 in. backspace for the front. And 10x20 in. 5,5 backspace for the rear.
When i took them home i realised that the rear wheels where machined down 1/2 in. on the mounting flange. I can see from the numbers on the wheel that they where born with 5 in. backspace. - now they are 5,5 in like i ordered. The seller clains that he has not machined them down and that they came from coys (in USA) like that. Now my question goes - have any of you, who has bought Coy's wheels - recieved wheels that are machined down to get the ordered backspace. (paid 3360 $ with tires. - know they are cheaper by you)
One more thing - the spokes on the front wheels (in the outer end) are 3/4 in. wider than the rears.
Thanks a lot - Ulrik - Denmark - Europe
498 SS Apr 27th, 10, 7:42 PM Coys has pulled this stuff in the past, I remember reading. And cheaper is an understatement, should have been half of that without all the extra shipping.
Todds34rod Apr 27th, 10, 9:34 PM I have heard this as well. There is a guy on here that has had a similar experience. He has an actual website that says exactly what you just said.

Hope this helps.
I can see how this could make someone mad. It would make me very upset. I order my backspace to give me a certain amt of dish. I like the deep dish look on my wheels. If they machine to fit, it does not give you the dish that you are intending for.
72ragtop Apr 28th, 10, 12:01 AM Yeah, that's me. Depending on how they were machined, it might be a problem and it might not. What is the quality of the machine work, and is there sufficient meat left under the seat of the lug nut? In my case it was real bad. I'm a self taught machinist, and tried to explain to them ways they could improve their quality. They seemed interested, told them machining a wheel flange with a 1/2" end mill in a milling machine was not the way to go. Told them if they couldn't do it in a lathe, they should at least use a face mill in the milling machine, that way they could make one smooth pass with a rotary table. Hopefully that's how they did yours, although honestly I'd be surprised if it is. Good luck, Jim
Mr.350 Apr 28th, 10, 11:59 AM Hi again - went to the dealer with the wheels today.
He keeps saying that Coy's did the machine job- and from what i can read here - the wheels are machined down the same way described in 72ragtop's link. (wheels look like ****, with chips and everything.
As i mentioned last - the spokes are not same width- 3/4 in. from the front to the back wheels. The dealer will not order me a new set because, he means that coy's will deliver another set like this.
Really great starting this summer with no wheels for my Chevelle. Thank you Coy's.!!!
To make thinks perfect - i only waited three month.
Does any one know a serious wheel and tire shop/company that ships to Europe?
Thanks - Ulrik
67Stunt-A-Lot Apr 28th, 10, 12:06 PM I bought coys wheels years ago, I never like the quality at all. For what you spent, there are a hand full of USA companies that would have given you a much better product. If you look at their web site gallery not one of the cars looks good with mickey mouse hokey pokey backspacing- unless the car is bagged.
You live and you learn.
Sometimes doing things the cheapest way actually becomes the most expensive way.

Do yourself a favor and contact Jon Henson over at www.driverzinc.com he handles all brands of wheel/tire packages and ships all over Europe.
I personally would suggest Vintage Wheel Works for that classic look but they only make those in 17's,the 18" line is rumored to be in production soon...just not yet.
Check out their own NewGen wheels, they have some very cool designs and they are VERY reasonably priced.
Both of these wheels I mentioned have custom backspacing and are US forged, not offshore like Coys...:noway:
Tell Jon I sent you...and good luck man!
Newstalgia Wheel Apr 28th, 10, 2:57 PM PM sent.

We can definitely help you. Ship quite often to Europe, Aus, Japan, so international shipments are not an issue. We specifically DO NOT sell Coys because of problems such as these. I have many 20" wheels in stock that would be similiarly priced, from Foose Legends, to Billet Wheels.
Here is our Website, www.driverzinc.com, and if you have a free second to email us at jon@driverzinc.com, or call 951-371-1167 I'm MORE than happy to work with you, and make sure you get what you want in a better quality wheel.
Thanks for a chance at your business.
