Sure wish they made a set that used the hood springs instead of those pneumatic shocks. I don't care how good the shocks are, they won't last as long as a set of springs.

Killer prices? I thought the lowest was $519? Thats killer alright, a wallet killer... :D

I do think they look nice, and I'd love to have a set. Maybe if I was to the end of my project with nothing else to buy... But there are so many other places I'd rather spend $500+...

Every car I have with these piston things crap out in 2 or 3 years. Seems sort of counter productive to restore a 40+ year old car and not be able to open the hood. l:)

I know, I hear you. I am sure the ones they make are second to none. The whole idea of those piston things are very modern. That part I like, but just think about coming across a "barn find" in 2060...the one with the cool hinges...

Do you want the hood to smash your head into the fender as you peer into the engine bay, or...

Well I guess I'd like to be able to imagine what the installer was thinking when they added hinges that look really cool and still work after all these years. Maybe I'm just a tad more nostalgic.

Just watch yer fingers l:)

finding a barn in 2060 will BE the "barn find".

Hinges are sweet, I like them. I have been looking at the trunk hinges to do first and then in a year or two when I have 500 more I can go for the hood.

Or maybe I should just buy a barn and put a cover on it and wait for 2060. ;)

I like em, no doubt.

No, I didn't.

There is no point of having a nice billet hinge, if you just going to put a big ugly spring on it.

What about a small sexy spring? Sometimes its all about compromise.

Encase the spring in a small cylinder housing and hide it somehow. Think outside the box here....like a liberal that wants to be successful and buys a gun store....or a fiscally conservative / social moderate pimp at an anti tax rally. Sometimes it doesnt make sense but works out and looks good.

i dont think the shocks will wear out from the use we put them up to. we have lots of the shocks on our fire engines, and i cant remember the last time we ever had an issue. we open our doors way more in one month than i'll EVER open my hood.

the springs just look old. nothing against them if thats the theme, but the billet hinges update the look, and they need the shocks to go with them.

Will they work with a fiberglass hood?

They just use different shocks for different weight hoods.

I bought a set and installed them on my 70. When I closed the hood, ever so slowly, to check clearance, the hinge litterally exploded !. THe rivet that holds it together pulled thru the hinge. After investigation, we finally decided that the after market fenders were abit farther apart then the stock fender and when the hinge was pulled down to close the hood it was forcing the hinge to close at just enough angle that it broke it apart. SO be careful if you have aftermarket fenders as you may have to shim to back hole to make it close at the correct angle. I sent them back to Fesler and they were very good about refunding the money and said they had not run into the problem before. I haven't tried another set, just had my originals powder coated. THey are drop dead gorgeous hinges, but Be careful if you are installing on a 70.

WOW, sorry to hear that JLowe. I have all the Fesler billet parts sitting here for my car not installed yet and so far they look great and as I build my car I have been taking pics to put in my build post and will include how mine work out. I think they are bitchin. These cars are toys in the end, we build them as we feel they should personally and if you like all the billet bling go for it, if you like the more suddle looking stuff then do that. At any rate if we all had these for commuter cars I would feel the billet stuff is silly.

I've got a set on my '70. No problems whatsoever with the install or since. The steel hood feels like fiberglass when opening. I like them alot, both for function and appearance. They are pricey, though.

Thanks, Nick. There was a thread but it's from '05/'06. I tried to find it, but no luck. Sorry.

It was a rotisserie frame off that took 4 years to complete. To some extent, it's still a work in progress. I have some in progress pics in my showroom, but you have to be a member to access them (I think).

Ill never buy another set of factory hinges. I caved in an purchased a set and they work flawlessly. The hood opens and closes with ease and the hood does not bind during operation.....no more chiped paint. maybe its just me but its worth it when you have so much invested in quality paint job.

Not to steal the thread, but anyone think its possible to adapt a set of a stock hinges for use with struts? I really would rather have struts than springs, but I'm not sure where would be the best/effective attachment points for the struts, and how I would go about picking the correct strut for the application

How do they compare in weight to the stock pieces?

Jul 7th, 10, 12:20 AM
MarkM.... yes they are EMS hinges. Seem like a quality part and I am pleased with them so far. I cant emphasize enough how smoothly they operate.

Rumblin70SS.... Its been awhile since I've handled them, so from what I can recall I'd say they probably weigh a little less the the factory hinges.

If your budget allows, I highly recommend a pair.

my ring bros hinges weigh about the same as stock.

there is a thread floating around on the camaro site about doing that to the deck lid. theres a formula attached, and should get you in the ball park.

for me, if i was going to spend money rebuilding my old hinges, money on struts, and then the time it would take me to get it all to work, its much cheaper to buy the expensive billet pieces. same deal with my sway bar. i saved 400 bucks over the dse bar but have probably 25 hours into it. id rather just pay the money.

So I would like to bring up a great point about these billet hinges, last night I was "fitting" my new cowl hood to the car before it gets primered. I was having a hell of a time making the hood open and closes with out contacting the fenders, mind you these are my stock spring hinges and are more than likely the ones that came on the car. After a while I said the hell with it and busted out the new billet hinges (didn't want to use them yet because I have alot of engine bay work to do). MAN what a dream to open and close. I am still having hood fitment problems but the hinges are well worth the money looking at it if you have a high dollar paint job or just want things to work smother. No more side to side action like the OE hinges.

I dont know if it helps or not or if its what you want to hear but I have the new AMD cowl hood (Picked up from Matts, I know you do business there) and it fits mint. VERY small 1/16" gap on the pass side but thats it. adding metal with the mig to the front lip and grinding it back to take up the gap. The AMD hood is nice, dont know if thats what you have or what but the one I grabbed when they came out is great. Good fit at the back, sides, just a tiny bit short on one side but no biggy. Metal is nice and thick, stout piece.

Kind of a tangent to this thread but I just had my stock hinges rebuilt by Willie over at hoodhingerepair.com and good LORD they came out sweet! I mean night and day over stock. Just stellar. I couldnt afford the billet stuff yet and now that I have these rebuilts from hoodhingerepair I dont know that I will. I know I will run these until they fail and given the work they did I dont know that they ever will.

The billet stuff is slick but if you cant afford it yet or at all and want GREAT hinges send yours to hoodhingerepair.com. GREAT people, GREAT family and GREAT work. And they helped me keep my resto all USA made as well. Not a foreign part on my car yet and im in a frame off.
