: Bumper Jack ??

Guys,
A basic question I know, but important one for someone like myself who isn't quite sure.

Which is the best jack type to carry around wtih ya. I was told I need an original type bumper jack to lift the body in order to change tires in case of flat etc??
I was thinking of just carrying a bottle type jack.

It's for a 65 Chevelle, and I just got it on the road and haven't had a need for a jack yet. What do you guys carry?

For some reason I don't trust those jacks. I use one of those little floor jacks, the MVP Pro Lift. The type that the tire shops use, except smaller.

So I don't need to lift the body at the bumper? I was told that the design of the car needed to have the body only lifted in order to chage out tires in the rear?

If your jack will work that would be great.

Jack,
Just place the jack along the frame and you'll be alright. The ideal for changing rear wheels is jacking the whole backend up by the rearend, putting jackstands under the frame to support the body and letting the jack down so the rearend comes down and the rear tires clear. Although, on the side of the road that isn't always possible, so you can put a small jack like trevor recommended on the frame rail right in front of the rear tire thats flat and jack it up, the body will go up in the back on that side and up on that side as well and you'll be able to replace your flat that way. Those bumper jacks only really seem good for detailing and throwing in your trunk in your showcar or bending up your bumpers from uneeded stress on em'.

Thanks for the info. I'll check into the the MVP Pro Lift, as malibu man and yourself suggest and lift were you said to.

Were you the guy who was lookin for the max wheel/tire combo for your 65? If so, what did you determine was the best fit/offset?

I have Eibac lowering springs all around and have been watching the posts periodically.

I'd like to order on the internet to save some bucks but don't want to get stuck.

Keep the bumper jack for looks only. Keep a small floor jack with you and jack up under the frame rails as mentioned.

Using a bumper jack is not only dangerous but it's cruel to your car too.

TIP: Secure the floor jack if storing in the trunk so it doesn't roll around and slam into your quarter panels.

Yeah, that's true. Some of the MVP jacks come with a carrying case. That will help the jack from sliding around. I think I bought our MVP jacks from KMART.

Yea good advice mr409.
That's all I need is to have the jack dent the panel. And a case would be nice.
MVP jack @ K-Mart, I'll have to check it out.
I found it on line, but with shipping and all....$$

Hope your satisfied with MVP. Their good jacks. While your there, look for some wheel chocks to put in front and behind your tires. Very cheap safety item. They've saved my life before.

Yea, that jack looks like a good little jack.
I'll go and search out an MVP jack this weekend.
I used to keep a couple of 4x4 pieces in my trunk awhile back, but have gotten away from it. Need to get me a couple more. Good thinking.

I use a small floor jack contained in it's own plastic case, and it lays on the shelf in my trunk, next to the spare battery and battery cables, air tank and water and gas tanks.

I never trusted those original jacks, and they are harsh to ones bumper, but I still keep it under the spare tire, just in case, and for originality I guess.
