: Torque Thrust II 17" 1965??
Ricky65SS Apr 20th, 10, 1:40 PM Hello I am purchasing 17" Torque Thrust II for my 65 chevelle
Just want to make sure they will fit?? Everyone I have talked to says well they should fit lol. Just don't want to be stuck with wheels I can't use or return.
Front: 17x7 4" offset
Rear : 17x8 4.5 offset
Also what is the biggest tire profile that will fit as well.
Thanks in advance.
Ricky
Jeff65SS Apr 20th, 10, 3:41 PM Hi, you'll need 5" of backspacing for the rears. The fronts will depend on how low the car is, I've got 16 x 7 TTII with 4-1/4" of back space and the tire sidewall would sometimes hit the formed lip of the inner fenderwell. Car was pretty low then, I've since rasied it some. check with American, I think 4-1/4" was the max backspacing available for 7" width.
Also, I'm currently running 275-50-15 M/T drag radial on the back of mine, pretty much the max I can fit. Section width measures 11-1/8".
savage71chevelless Apr 20th, 10, 6:44 PM Ricky, I have the exact setup on my 67 with no problems. I would think it should fit, although the rear of a 65 might be a little tighter. I have plenty of room in the rear of my 67 though with the 17x8's, probably could have gone with 9.5's if I wanted to, so you should be fine. The tire setup I have is 235/45's in the front, and 255/45's in the rear. Perfect amount of rubber if you ask me
Jeff65SS Apr 20th, 10, 10:28 PM Rear wheelwells on a 65 are much narrower than a 67. My Dad has a 67 and is running 275-60-15 M/T drag radials on 8" rims. Section width is 11-1/2" plus no way would this fit on a 65.
Trust my advise its solid. Try doing a search you'll find lots of info.
Hal's64Malibu Apr 20th, 10, 11:16 PM 4.5" front with a 55 series 215 tire should be fine even if you're dropped. Tire size matters the most in this instance because with only 4.5" sticking out from offset the rim is certainly tucked in enough. A 275 60 series is way too wide. You can fit a 275 on the rear you just have to go with a 35 series instead of a 60 (which is crazy tall anyway) and centered with proper offset maybe adjusted using spacers. I have 2" drop spindles and a horrible 5.25" front which is way too much but with 50 series 205 it doesn't rub all the time (very short tire but still doesn't fix the problem). The rear rims are the same but the tires are 235 60. The rear fender line is about 1" above the top of the rim (might be higher than stock) but it also rubs on bumps (needs to be fixed as well). I was looking at the custom sized TT2 9.5" which have 5.8 and 5.56 available offsets. Problem with either of those is the 5.56 leaves you with about 5" front which I know is too much and the other with 5.8 offset might scrap the inside.
If you don't understand fitment it's this way. A rim that states 8" wide is actually 9" wide because they count all the way to the tip of the lip beads on both sides. Those beads add 1" regardless of rim width (so a 9.5 is actually 10.5). So a zero offset 8" rim is 4.5" leaving 4.5" of front rim. A different rim that states 8" may have less offset like 3.75 leaving 5.25 front (too much and sticks out past the fender).
I guess the end answer for you is yes, those rims are fine, but you can still rub if you go too wide with tires.

Ricky65SS Apr 21st, 10, 6:28 PM Hal, Savage, Jeff, Thanks for all the info.
Much appreciate. Very helpful.
Always best to check before purchasing! Great timing, actually picked up the rims today. I know I will have to be more selective with the tire size.
Most likely be running a mid range tire not a low profile and not the real large ones.
Actually the 15 " were my second choice. I like old school but wanted a little more rim and a little less tire.
I think the 17" will work great. Don't get me wrong I love the old school look with the 15" and big tires. All my hotrod friends use 15"x 7" & 15 x 8" or 15" x 6" 15 x7" depending. From 32 Roadsters, Hi-boys, Bel air, Nova's, Woody's etc. They look good you can't go wrong with that look.
Thanks again
I'll post a pic of my car soon

Jeff65SS Apr 21st, 10, 8:35 PM My street tires are 16", drag race stuff is 15". I was just too lazy this winter to swap them out.
sschevellefan Apr 22nd, 10, 6:59 PM On my last 65 chevelle I had 15x8 rallys with a 5" backspace and 275/60/15 dunlops. They were on the car when I got it but they will fit. It`s a pain in the butt getting them off the car though. As for the 17`s, I have 17x8`s with either a 4.5 or 4.75 backspacing and 255/40/17 on my 65 el camino. Again, these were on the car when I got it and haven`t pulled them off yet to measure exactly. There is no cutting on my el camino and I`m pretty sure I could fit a 275/40/17 if I trimmed the lip but alot of guys here say a 8" rim is too narrow for the 275`s. With the right backspacing you can fit a 275 tire regardless od what series it is, 40, 50, 60, but if you don`t want to cut anything, go with some 255,`s.
Hal's64Malibu Apr 22nd, 10, 7:10 PM I guess you'll have to ask a tire shop if they would be willing to mount 275 (10.8" wide) on steel 8" rims.
I'm sure that was tough to get them in and out of the wheel wells!

Todds34rod Apr 22nd, 10, 9:38 PM I would do a 255 on an 8 inch wheel. This car has a 255 on an 8in wheel and i think it is plenty wide enough. Granted you not looking for this tall of tire, but the width looks good. I am referring to the rear wheel.
