So, I'm looking on Craigs list as I usually do, and I find an ad that says, "1966 Chevelle original SS hood $80.00."
I couldn't believe it and figured it was shot, but the picture looked ok. So I called the guy and before I could look at it, he sends me an email saying he would take $60 for it. Needless to say, I picked it up and got it home.
I plan on sandblasting it so I can really see what's left. It has some small holes (That will become big holes when I blast.) and some rust lines in it too. For the price, I can't go wrong.

The reason I want to blast it instead of strip, is because there is some bondo on it too, and I want to see what good metal is really left. I don't know when I will get to work on it, so I was just going to shoot it with a rust primer from a rattle can for now after I blast. I don't think they make any etching primer in a can and I will sand it off before I do any body work in the future and paint it. What do you guys think?

I would not blast it if I were you. Just sand and work it by hand.

Thanks for that JJ, I will check and see if I can get it through work (Advance).
I understand the issues with blasting. I have experience in it and will be careful. I prefer blasting so I can be sure to get rid of all the "weaker" metal around the rust holes. Hand sanding will just clean it, not necessarily get rid of the weaker metal underneath.
I will try to keep you guys updated on whether I get this thing looking good, or ruin it. lol.

I'm still a little nervous for your hood but somewhat mollified by your stated experience. Take her slow and easy.

Heck, how far wrong can you go for $60, right?

Paint stripper, no sandblast.

If you have access to one try using a soda blaster instead of sand. Might not do much for getting rid of the "weaker metal" but it should not warp what good metal you have left. $60.00 is a good deal I paid $300.00 for an original SS hood at a swap meet to replace mine. Good luck!

Find someone who does dip tank stripping it is usually cheap 60 to 70 bucks but it cuts it to bare steel with no abrasions or fear of warping. The local guy here in Iowa does a great job had himn do my doors fenders hood and deck lid

If you know what you are doing you should have less incident of warping. I am more worried about having to weld in patch panels. That will warp it worse. I am going to blast it tomorrow morning and I got a couple cans of etching primer from work. I will post pictures and let you guys know how I did. (Crossing fingers)

welding doesn't have to warp the metal if you allow it to cool...you don't go in a straight line etc...

Also you cut out the rust and make nice squares where's there's rot through. Measure the cutout and make a new one...

Well guys, I did not warp the hood. But that's mainly because I could not get the darn blaster to work good enough. Those things always clog up.
I am going to try to contact a professional and see what they will charge.

Well, after I left the shop, the professional I was looking for ended up next to me at the light on my way to work. I asked him how much for the hood and he said $50 bucks, so I said "Pull over." I opened the back of my truck and he was like, "You have the hood here?" I told him about the shop I was doing it at that I used to work at and he said he was the one that did the 68 Camaro years ago when I worked there. I said "I was looking for you!" So I gave him the hood and picked it up a couple days later. It came out better than I thought. The holes did not get much bigger. It looked like this after the blast.

I then sanded it with some 80 grit.

And then put on some etching primer and primer to protect it till I can start working on it. It now looks like this.

I am now looking at getting original inserts and chrome for the hood.
I have two I am looking at. Local ones for $150 or far away ones for $132? What do you guys think?

looks like a different hood, what happend to all the rust?? lol

Nice job.
What happened to the dent in the nose?
Did you repair the rust or is that the next thing on the list?

$150 for OEM inserts and chrome sounds very fair.

I wanted to have it blasted so I can really see what I have. I had to coat it because of other projects right now and I don't know when I will get to work on it. All the rust and damage is still there. It is going to end up a "street rod" hood it will have a skim coat of filler to straighten it out
