: Problems with Cragar S/S wheels
Shawn Jun 2nd, 02, 9:44 PM I'm looking into getting a set of these, you know the Cragar's that were popular in the 60's. I'm a bit hesitant to do it though because I've heard stuff about the lug nuts coming loose a lot and since this would be going on a daily driver, I don't want to have to check the torque before every trip out or have to worry about it while driving. Is it really a problem or just a rumor?

Maddening Jun 3rd, 02, 6:19 AM Hey Shawn, I've never heard of that myself.. I had Cragar SS's on a '64 Impala, and never had any problems, drove it 1000's and 1000's of miles. Maybe it's the universal fit Cragars, with the unilug you're thinking of.
Also.. I just browsed your website, and I thought I had rust problems:

But... WHOA!! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif I hope you manage to save that beast, and believe me I'll keep an eye out up here too, there's a few Elky and Station Wagons in the yards that may have alot of the sheetmetal you need, I'll be watchful. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Maddening Jun 3rd, 02, 6:24 AM Oh, and my car also was the same light mint green color (I saw it in the tailgate pics) as yours was originally. I have lots of good pics of a few painted in that original color. I can upload them online if you want. I'm not a big fan of it myself, I kinda like the green mine was repainted in and currently is. And since I got lucky enough have an almost perfect green interior (only seat cover bad) my choices for exterior colors are very limited. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif

Steve A Jun 3rd, 02, 8:28 PM A long time ago, I had a rear Cragar wheel come loose and fall off of the car when I was driving. It was before the unilugs came out. Had a friend with a Nova that had a Cragar wheel loosen up also. I'd probably use them again, but I'd check them regularly with a torque wrench.
pauls Jun 5th, 02, 1:06 PM Shawn,
I had a Crager SS almost fall off while driving on the freeway. My wheels fit three different bolt circles - is that what you mean by unilug? Now I torque them to 70 ft-lbs before driving. I would not buy them again.

SS_Dave Jun 6th, 02, 4:08 PM I have been running the crager SS unilugs for 3 yrs now. No problems. Just check them the first 50 mi. after mounting and then spot check every 200 -1000 mi.
kevin d Jun 7th, 02, 5:32 AM I had the Cragar unilugs for 4 years. I never had a problem with them coming loose. Balancing was a big problem. I switched to ralley rims.
