: 70 SS 396 ALMOST done - just a few odds and ends

We are very close to having our 70 done. For us it has been 50 months of on and off again with the last dash done with the help of a few of our car club members. We bought it as an unfinished project - a real work in progress - with a lot less progress than we thought once we got into it.

So, here it is without the front and rear glass in it but otherwise it runs/drives/is ready to hit the alignment shop, get plated, and driven.

I do need to install the "pins" that hold the window trim for the back window as when the quarters were replaced (by the first guy restoring the car) they were not done. I managed to acquire the GM screw in studs with the factory sealant. I just need to figure out how far apart they go, drill the holes and install them, then get the glass guy over to do the two windows. This is very exciting.....

Thanks - I'll get it outside later today or tomorrow where I can get some decent pictures. I've also got to put the rubber pad back on the bumper so have to figure out what glue to use. Pics won't show it installed yet, also need it to be a tad warmer before I attempt that or it will end up a speed bump somewhere.

Seeing a lot of new people signing up here lately. :) Did you just find out about this site? We would love to see pics of the restoration process if you can post them. To some of us that's even better than the finished pics!

I actually have been using the site for a long time over the period we did the work on the car but wasn't a member. I've also got a 1957 Pontiac Safari 2 dr Wagon (Nomad Style) that we haul a 1951 Airstream with and got caught up on the AirForum's site and the Stationwagon forums - so it becomes a bit much keeping up with it all.

I've got quite a few photos I'll load on the restoration once I'm caught up and also have the windows in. Trying to have it done for a friends wedding in a few weeks and at the same time put a 700R4 in the '57 Pontiac so we can head out on holidays as soon as the wedding is over.

Thanks again for the encouraging comments. They are appreciated.

Car looks excellent. Where did you find the GM 'pins' for the window trim?

Thanks. The pins - found them from a fellow in Chilliwack, BC, Canada. I was picking up a 700R4 for my '57 Pontiac and that fellow has a '68 Chevelle SS and we got talking and I mentioned I needed to find the pins and he said to call so and so as he knows he'd found some when looking for his own 70 resto. So, on a lark, I went past his place and he was willing to part with enough to do my car. He said he spent a couple of months emailing GM dealers all over the US as he found out their contact information until he finally hit paydirt and was able to get enough to do a couple of vehicles. He paid, and this I paid, $3.05 each for them (ouch). Well worth it though - and since I've been told that some folks use similar sized screws but I wanted the proper pins.

Thanks Gary. We're pretty excited about having it done. The glass will go in end of next week and we've already been asked for it to be used in wedding photos of a good friend. He'd already asked to use the '57 Pontiac in the wedding as one of the cars but for the pictures they figure the Chevelle will look good in the back ground.

We have one little problem - I had a stroke just at the time of buying it and we aren't sure I'm going to be able to manage a 4 speed, but we'll give it a full blown shot and see what happens.
