the thing i am worried about is its outside diameter. i don't want it to hit the top of the wheel well. my car is running a 4.56 rear so i want a tire that is as tall as i can get but i don't want it to hit the top or sides of the wheel well when i hit a bump. the outside diamer of the tire is 30.5"

I wondered about these tires too, for my 67 (4.10's). With a tread width of 8.5 and a rim width of 8.5 the section width should be almost the same, I think they should fit.
Now if I drop them to 20# I wonder if they have a chance of hooking?

I've been thinking about the same thing for my 70. That tire sure would help at hiway cruisin' time. It looks like it would fit fine, but it would be nice to hear from someone who's actually done it. I was thinking of a 15x8" repop SS rim with 4" to 5" of backspace for that tire. Let us know how it works if you do it.

Use 5.5 inches of B/S and roll the lip on the wheel well and you should be fine. I have 28.4 inch tall tires and have dropped the car 2 inches and I don't come close to hitting the top of the wheel well.
I have 295/45/18's with 6 inches of B/S on a 10 inch wheel. I have about 1/2 inch clearance to the frame and the same to the rolled fender lip. A 285 is a bit narrower and with 5.5 B/S you would be less than a 1/2 inch further out than my setup which should leave 1/4 to the fenderlip and over 1/2 inch from the frame.
