I ordered a set of Boyd Coddington Smoothie II wheels a few weeks ago for my 70', and they should be in soon, but I still haven't decided on what tires to run...I'd like to hear from some of you other guys with 17's on your Chevelle...what sizes are you running?
Mine are 17x7 on the front, and 17x10 on the rear...I have been seriously considering some tires from Nitto...they make a 50 series 17 that a lot of guys run on lowered full size trucks...they're low profile, but not too low (remember these 70 Chevelle's have some big wheel wells to fill). I was considering 275/50/17 on the rear, and 255/50/17 on front. They also make them in 225/50/17 that I could run on front...but that may be too small.
I like the 315/35/17 for the rear, they will fit, but I think they are too low profile for me...also have lowered springs in the car, so that's getting down there.
Let me hear from you!
Thanks!

I have 50 series 17" Nitto NT-450's on my 67. 225/50R17 on the front w/17x7, 4" b/s wheels and 255/50R17 on 17x8 rears w/ 5" b/s. I could have gone to a larger rear tire but the 255's work fine and it would have been too expensive to push the envelope and I didn't want too tall a tire. My car has a slight forward rake and I didn't want to exagerate it any more.
I bought the wheels and tires from http://www.wheelsforless.com our of Kennedale, Tx. 4 wheels/4 tires and 10 extra lugs nuts for the front ran a tad over $1500. Mounted, balanced, and UPS delivered to my door. Nice folks to deal with. The 225/50R17s are currently listed at $113 each and the 255/50R17's are $125 each and 27" tall. The 275/50R17 go for $132 each and are 27.8" tall.
The tires are much better than the BFG T/A radials I took off and put on my Elky. They definately go where the car is pointed! It took me a couple of days to get used to them; found myself "weaving" down the road at times. Check my sig line for a look.

Hey thanks for the reply, Dale! I'll check those guys out for the tires. Nice looking Chevelle!!
Just another question...how tall are those 255's that you have on the back? I'm just wondering how much taller the 275's will look in comparison.
Thanks again!

My 68 has17'S. (http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/mild68ssw17s.jpg.jpg)255/45 BFG fronts. 315/35 BFG rears.
A tall sidewall is a good idea.

Mild68, that's a nice looking Chevelle! What do you not like about the lower profile side wall? Is it just too harsh of a ride, or the fender well gap?
I went ahead and ordered the 50 series Nitto's today...my rear wheels showed up, and they look really nice! I'll get some pics out pretty soon...doing a motor, trans, and wheels/tires all at once...it's turned into a big project!
Thanks for the reply!

BTW - Just wanted to point out that I didn't notice much gap on yours...it appears to sit nice.

The taller profile provides more cushion for a comfortable ride and protects the rim from impact.
