The 135 is a Malibu with a 6 cylinder engine and the 136 is a Malibu with a V8 engine.

My dad has a junk parts car that has 135 and a hole for floor shifter. Can I assume it was cut their by someone? Cory,
Yes, you can assume the hole in the floor of the 135 car was cut by someone. Six cylinder cars were not available from the factory with a floor mounted shifter. The factory floor mounted shifter cars were more than just a hole in the floor, there was a specific metal hump that was spot welded into the floor.

The 136 car obviously had a Powerglide transmission and either a 283 or 327 engine. Maybe the emblems on the front fenders will give you a clue to which smallblock it was otherwise no way to tell. Get the data from the trim tag on the firewall. It might tell you about some of the options on the car. Post the information here or check out chevellestuff.com for decoding information.

Malibus are cool even if they aren't an SS. My personal opinion is that there is no need to make an SS clone out of them. I like them as is with whatever drive train you want to put in them. But since this is the restoration forum, a period correct looking smallblock would be nice. The 1966 283s and 327s didn't have VINs on them, just an assembly code, so it is possible to find a date correct engine that would look like the original in that car.
