I bought a new tank for my 66 nice and new
Should a guy paint it?? If so what color?
Will it rust if you dont? How about clear coat?

Most people don't paint theirs since it comes galvanized

So do you wash the oily film off it first?
Then hang as is no paint correct
Are you sure about the galavanized part?
It looks like bare metal

No, you don't wipe it off, that's what helps protect it. Just leave it as is. No Paint!

Galvanizing is a process of protecting metal with a zinc coating. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot-dip_galvanizing for more on it.

Personal opinion I guess.. but this Forum is dedicated to where Originality Comes first.. was created for that reason and for guys who want to discuss Originality and Correctness.. so, sometimes Nice may not always play well with what is correct ;)

My 12 year old gas tank looks just like it did when it was new.

Nicer is a matter of opinion. A gas tank that's been clear coated will always look like that, a gas tank that someone shot clear coat on.

A gas tank is galvanized, and really no particular reason to shoot it with clear coat, unless you planned on making a Donk mobile and everyone who walked under it could see their reflection. ;) Each to his own I guess.

Most who are comfortable with a paint gun can knock the clear down so you'd never know it was cleared. A point to consider is how you want your undercarriage to age if driven. Would you want all pieces to age gracefully or a few protected to stand out and look a little out of place. I remember years ago, someone asked a restoration expert how to make his restored car look as it would with 30k miles? The answer; "restore it to concous status and then drive it 30k miles". The problem with this theory is the finishes that we as restorers have at our disposal differ from what was available 40 years ago, making it impossible to create a truly accurate illusion of antiquity. This is the challenge that keeps the hardcore restorers trying so hard. My jaw has dropped a number of times when I see what the gifted and dedicated restorers can accomplish.

Question a survivor, if it has a repaint, is it still a survivor, notice guys listing cars as survivors, but with a repaint, to me no, but just wondering

I put a new tank in my 66SS back in the late 90s and it still looks good. I didnt do anything to it. Just installed it right out of the package.
