: Wheel and tire trend

I've noticed that the trend lately with wheels and tires is to go with a really low profile tire and a tall rim. Like a lot of the tri 5's that I've been seeing on the magazine covers with the 18" wheels in the front and the 20" in the rear (or larger). I'm glad to see that for the most part the Chevelle community is a little behind on this trend. I like the way some of those cars look but I'm a fan of the Muscle car look. Please if you are one of the guys that is doing or wants to do this don't think I'm against it. To each his (or her) own. If it's a Chevelle I like it, just a preference I guess. See ya at the shows!

I agree. 17" wheels still look great, but 18" and 20" are just silly. I've heard enough people complain about ride quality with the 17" wheels, I doubt, I'll ever go bigger than 16" on an old car.
If a modification improves performance, its worth it. If it makes the car harder to live with, and doesn't perform better, its just posing, like the ricers.
Actually I do like the look, but I'll bet most of those Tri-5s are trailer queens, or from an area, where pot holes are less prevelent.

I personally like the look of a nice big fat sidewall, so 15" is the biggest rims i'll go with!

Variety is the spice of life.
I personally like tall sidewalls, but some cars look good with large wheels. Unfortunately it seems every car in the HotRod type mags MUST have HUGE wheels with tiny sidewalls, or it doesn't get into the mag.
It is too bad that most of our society uses the Lemming theory - if everyone else does it, I will too.
I'm glad we have a great variety here in Chevelle land.
My son's friends with these tiny sidewall tires suffer lots of rim damage too ! AND those rims ain't cheap

Cragar mag wheels and lettered tires are nice too, but you don't see them too often. Custom wheels sure can change the look of a car though!

I agree very strongly with Chris above. 15" is the largest I will put on any of my "Muscle Cars". Just not my cup of tea on these older cars.

I also must agree, 15's maybe and a big maybe on 16's. They just don't look right on our cars. As far as I'm concerned let the civics and the rest of the rice burners ride on big wheels.

I guess I just won't see my car on the cover of Hot Rod anytime soon. I have 15's on my 66, 235/70/15 on the front and 275/60/15 on the rear. The only reason I have the 15's is because I put four wheel disc brakes on the car and I needed the clearance.
I did see a 67 Chevelle somewhere around here that had 17's that looked very nice. So I can't knock it, I just wouldn't do it myself.

About 5 years ago, Motor Trend did an article, in which, they took a civic, and ran the cones, with 14",15",16", and 17" wheels and tires. I know that the dynamics of civic, and Chevelle handling are way different, but what got me was with the stock suspension, the 15" or 16" was the fastest. And that the 17" wheels were actually slower than the 14".
Just remember that when you see some youngster, with wheels and tires, that cost more than a paycheck.

Well I do think they look good on some cars but I love the steam roller look on a muscle car http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Tall FFFAAAATTTTT tires in the rear and smaller tires in the front with a the right rake in stance...

Oh, god excuse me I need to go...
