My buddy has a '72 Elky with some some Mickey Thompson Sportsman Is that are 10''s wide. The thing I don't get is, that he has 15x8s with 5.5'' backspacing. I have the same rim size, 15x8 with 5.5 and I've been told that I better watch out going over P255/60 (8.2'' wide) or I'll rub, lipping the wheel well or not. Are Elky's different or something? I would love to run some 9'' Indy Profiles but I've been told that its not going to work, period. How is this? And if this is false, are 9'' tires safe to run on a '70 'Velle with crimped wheel well lips with 15x8, 5.5'' BS? Thanks for advice on this baffling subject.

You were given bad advice.

8" rim, 4.5" backspacing, max tire is ~11"

I have a 1971 el camino has 16x8" wheels with 4.5" backspacing. I'm running 275R50-16. That tire is 10.8" wide. I could be a little wider and still not rub.

Keep in mind that I have 5.5'' of BS NOT 4.5'', I realize that 4.5'' is the right application, but the rims are already paid for. I've been told that 15x8 w/ 4.5'' is right and also that 15x10 with 5.5'' would be right also, but I have 15x8 with 5.5''s, and I really don't even know why they sell this rim if I can't run any tire bigger than a lame @$$ 255. Any thoughts?
