I have BFGoodrich 295-50-15s under the back of my 66 Convertible, and I have not cut the outer lip at all...even run the factory wheel well moulding...
The back ride on 15X8 ralleys, but I did have them custom built (offset)from Wheel Vintiques. I don't recall the offset I chose, but I blew it anyway, because they rubbed the inner fender. A spacer on the brake drum cured that... They were really reasonably priced (like $60), but that was a few years ago...
Just measure the inner, outer, and brake drum flange and figure what offset you need to get the wheel centered in the wheel well...
Up front, I am running BFG 265-50-15s on a stock 15X7 ralley wheel (1970's Monte Carlo rim). I am also running disc brakes from a 1972 Chevelle, which supposedly move the wheels out slightly...
I used to have the car REALLY LOW (5-6 inches lower than stock), and it was okay, minor front rubbing at a full turn, but nothing major... Had to raise the car though, as my headers were about 1-inch off the ground...
I literally took off the "dots" on the road when I changed lanes...
I have not seen any other 66 Chevelles with this size tire... Usually about a 275-60-15 is the biggest most people put under...
I do run all poly-eurathane bushings, which seem to help keep the rearend located well under cornering...

hey Knee Knocker,
buddy of mine wants to sell me his 255-70r-15 for the back and he has 255-60r-15 for the front. Is the 255-70r-15 to tall to fit? the tires are bfgoodrich ta's. thanks for the other info you gave, very helpful.
thanks

I think255 70s should do okay, depending on the rim and how low the car is...
I think the 15X7 ralleys might center the wheel in the wheel well, and would fit the 255s...
But, I think 255 60s will be wider than 255 70s... Wider on the front?

no,255-70r, and 255-60rs, are the same width, 10.04" according to www.dakota-truck.net. (http://www.dakota-truck.net.) They have a pretty cool tire calculator on there. the 70r's are 29.06" tall and the 60rs are 27.05". same width, just 2" taller in the back.
