: Big Uns!
SS540 Mar 20th, 02, 7:42 PM Here's a picture of the 345/55 x 15" BFG Drag Radials on my non-tubbed 71 Chevelle. Yes, they were a REAL tight fit!

bigdog454 Mar 20th, 02, 8:18 PM Way Way cool. How the heck did they fit??
Aren't those over 30" tall also?
Do you know if they might fit in 68/69s?
SS540 Mar 20th, 02, 9:01 PM I had to trim the wheelwell opening lips back to almost nothing. There is maybe 3/16" left - just enough to give the quarters some rigidity. Also had to "tap" on the frame and cut on the inner and outer wheelhouses to keep the tires from rubbing. The tires are 30" tall and about 14" at the fattest part.

Wes Colby Mar 20th, 02, 9:44 PM Wayne, you've literally stuffed your wheel wells with rubber! I like it. With 15 lbs. in each, they should hook - well, somewhat anyway. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif
Are you going to do anything with the front tires? As soon as the wheels get here, I plan to ditch the 255's in front and drop it down to a 205 or 215.
We need to have another get together in the near future bro. Do you guys still gather waaaay over there on the weekends?

406_70_velle Mar 21st, 02, 4:22 PM Do you think you could have gotten away without cutting the inner and outer wheelhouses? Maybe just heating them and bagging them around? Also I'm assuming their on a 15 x 10, right?

SS540 Mar 21st, 02, 8:54 PM Here's a side view.
I still have the 8 ply MT skinnies up front.
I probably could have heated some areas of the wheel houses and "reshaped" them, but some had to be cut.

Wally Mar 22nd, 02, 7:35 AM I ask you, does that not look better than the 19 and 20 rim deal with fork lift tires?
If I wanted a rice burner I would buy one.
I wish my 67 had a wheel house as big as that baby has. I ordered wheels and waited 6 weeks, opened the box and they were the wrong wheels! First time this has happened dealing with Monocoque.

406_70_velle Mar 22nd, 02, 9:34 AM Do you think we can get some shots of the inner wheel wells? I would be curious to see how you cut them and where they were making contact.
Secondly, I need a new trunk (rust/rot) I was thinking about putting in tubs specifically for this reason. Does anyone have any gripes with this? Problems that I might run into down the line?
Thanks…

Wally Mar 22nd, 02, 10:19 AM Tubs, are you going to move the frame rails in? That is the limiting factor on how much rubber you can put under the car and of course the diameter is the other.

blaauboer Mar 22nd, 02, 11:39 AM WOW, thats a tight fit wayne looks great ,
blaauboer Mar 22nd, 02, 12:21 PM On the tubbing question ,I cut the inners out on my car ,with putting a new trunk in at the same time. Fabbing the portions that were cut out was no problem. I did it all in one day.I did not have to modify the frame at all .
406_70_velle Mar 22nd, 02, 12:28 PM Well if you look at the trunk of a 68-72 chevelle you have like another inch or so between the wheel house and the frame rail. Then the house goes up and cuts into the room for the tire. My though was if you put the tub in even though i would be able to fit more rim underneath I would be able to fit a taller tire with less interference. Gaining the inch on the stock houses and a couple of inches of height as well.
blaauboer do you have any pics of your trunk?

blaauboer Mar 22nd, 02, 2:53 PM When i cut my inners ,You could look wright in the trunk so i had to do something. Sorry i have no pics of anything YET ... I am working on my website . I will have everything on there. I just finished a frame off , New cage , Rearend, Tranny,The 502 and all the fuel system ,Sump,Lines, etc were all done last year ,I broke the frame and rearend at the track last Oct.Almost done

SS540 Mar 22nd, 02, 8:34 PM It is true that cutting out the inner and outer wheelhouses and installing taller tubs will allow a larger tire without narrowing the frame. However, the frame is VERY close to my tires. In fact, it took a little massaging in a couple of places. I suppose that the frame could be notched and reinforced, allowing an even larger tire with a deeper offset wheel (currently using a 10" wide, 5.5" bs wheel). The trunk pan appears to tie in with the inner wheelhouse and that area gets in the way of a large tire. It could be narrowed some, which would help.
I don't have any pictures of the wheelhouses and I didn't bring the digital camera home from work. I can tell you that it ain't pretty! But, it doesn't show with that big tire in the way.
I think a 315 would fit with minimal surgery, if it was 28" tall or less. I had a set of 13.50 x 28" M/T ET Streets on the car and they didn't rub.

SS540 Mar 24th, 02, 7:12 AM Wes,
April 13th sounds good. We went to a cruise last night in the Woodlands. Real nice location, food & drinks served, nice cars, trophy given to the club pick, people were well behaved, Ken Caminiiti showed up with one of his rides, etc. That might be a good place to go. Got to get there early - about 6:30 or so for a good spot.

Wes Colby Mar 24th, 02, 10:36 AM That sounds good to me Wayne...exactly where is this place at?

Joe Y Mar 26th, 02, 1:56 PM Wayne,
Is there anyway you could unmount one of your rims and take a few pictures of your wheelwell, frame and inner/outer wheelhouses? I would like to do similar modifications. Looks great!

ChevelleFromHell Dec 4th, 02, 5:48 PM Cool, found this thread on a search. Gonna dig it up from the dead. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif
SS540, did you ever get a change to get some more shots of the car? Especially those wheel off pictures. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
I need to get new rims on the back, and bigger = better http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif. I was looking at those 345's in the BFG catalog, and I figured they would look nice. Fill's the wheelwell full, pretty much, the way a muscle car should.
- Matt
Your lawnmower needs bigger tires.
SS540 Dec 4th, 02, 9:06 PM I haven't taken any pictures of the modified wheelhouses (would that be wheel homes?). If I had it do do over, I probably wouldn't. It's a lot of work and the tires still rub at times. If you were to notch the frame and run a deeper offset to bring the tires in from the quarterpanel, then I would say go for it.

Clint44 Dec 6th, 02, 6:46 PM No flame intended but a 15x10 rim seems a little small for a 345 width tire. What's the recommended rim range?
SS540 Dec 7th, 02, 8:04 AM I don't recall for sure, but I think it was 10" to 12" wide. The tire looks good on the 10" wheel.
496vell Sep 2nd, 07, 11:32 AM Hello I Have A 70chevelle Im Building For The Track And I Found A Set Of 15x10 Draglites With A 4 1/2 Backing Space And I Want To Run Slicks.would 4 1/2 Be To Much And Look For A 5 1/2 Backing Space.im Trying To Find Pics Of The Ss540 Of His Tires.
SS540 Sep 2nd, 07, 2:41 PM That's an old thread and I don't have the pics of the BFG tires. I currently run 295 65 MT radials and they are a much better fit.
