Hi All,
I have been talking with a guy about buying some 1971/72 "SS" wheels. I believe they are the same as what came on the 1970-1981 Z28s. He said that they are 15" x 8". I thought that the SS wheels were only 15" x 7"? If 15 x 8 is correct, does anyone have them on a car? What size tires can be used on a '71 Chevelle? Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.

As far as I know they're 15x7. Maybe he had them widened?

I don't know, but now that I've thought more about it (could be trouble!). I'm thinking maybe he measured the distance between the outside lip of the rims, not from the inside lip of the rims.

Look at this http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/newwheels.jpg
This fine looking 68 belongs to David Reinecke, I think the wheels look great on his car.
Also Gene Chas, has an awesome 67 SS with the same wheels, and they look killer on his ride too. October, 2000 Feature Car

Thad,
Great pictures...your's and David's. By the way, I measures some 7" wheels last night and low and behold they're eight inches outside lip to outside lip. Now if I can get some tire size info. Is it common to run different sizes on the front and back? Or is it better to run the same size and give up some width on the back tires? What does everyone think?

Chevyrelic, Thanks,
As far as diffent size tires front to rear,
I run 215-65-15s front, and 275-60-15s rear.
I run the tall back tires (28" Dia.) to knock my rear gear (4.10s) down a bit.
As far as handling, I think its best to run same dia, front and back, plus it lets you have a spare that fits both.
But enough people run different sizes front to rear, that I doubt you'll have any problems if you go that way.
Also, my wheels, are 15"x7" (all 4).
Good luck, and post some pictures when you can. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

I thought my ears were burning...thanks for the kind words and link.
I'm running 245 60's on my wheels. No rubs and looks and handles fine.

Keep in mind that the early 5 spoke wheels are a little different than the later 77+ Z wheels. Here is a good site www.nastyz28.com/2gcog/stegmiller/z28_wheels.htm (http://www.nastyz28.com/2gcog/stegmiller/z28_wheels.htm)
