I'm sure this has been asked before, but I've been poring thru the old posts without getting the right info. My buddy has a '67 that he's putting a '68 rear in: Will 15x8 rims with 4.5 BS fit OK? We don't know the tire size yet. Thanks in advance.

I have a 67 with the 15x8 w/4.5" backspace and 275/60/15 McCreary tires. Right now I have just over 1/2" of clearance (at the widest part of the sidewall) from the tire to the unmodified inner fender. I just bought a 68-72 rear end, not installed yet. Since the rear end is exactly 1" wider over all it will be close. I figure I will have to roll the lip a little, but that is ok. If the car sits high, with the inner fender above the widest part of the sidewall you will have even more room.
Good luck.

Bill, I suspect 5" b/s would be better. That 1" wider axle is going to make it too close to call.

The 15x8 Wheel Vintique Rallyes I'm using for the slicks have a 4" backspace;the Cragar SS wheels for the street tires have a 4 1/8" backspace.I must add that my car's rear has very little sway from side to side, and I have just retired it from the street, so I'll never know if the backspacing is ideal for most street driving conditions.

Bill,
I put a '68 12 bolt under my '67 Elky. A 15x8" Eagle #211 wheels with 4.5" BS and 275/60-15 BFG drag radials fit fine. Also have had on 15x10" ralleys with 5" BS and ET Drags 28x10.5x15 slicks. Plenty of sidewall clearance in both cases and didn't have to roll the fender lip.
