: DIY Gas tank insulation?
webfoot Mar 30th, 10, 3:30 PM Just wondering if anybody has used something besides the special parts house tank to body insulation for their car. If nobody can see it, I don't want to pay a bunch of $$ and wait to get it.
I was thinking of using the stick on foam you see that can be used to seal a canopy.

I'd just get some thick rubber strips and glue to the top of the tank where it meets the suopports under the trunk. i think many people just use bicycle tubes
webfoot Mar 30th, 10, 4:20 PM Yeah, that would work!
Tank gets here today, too bad I didn't bother cleaning the straps off yet, or getting a sender.
Rich-L79 Mar 30th, 10, 5:00 PM Roofing tar paper seems to nearly exactly mimic what GM used. Cheap and easy to find.

That's what I used - I cut a piece to fit the whole top of the tank and slapped it in there instead of using strips here and there. So far so good, and you really gotta get up in there to see it.
pglade Mar 30th, 10, 11:15 PM I can provide strips cut to the length you need for the top of the tank. The material I use for my Gas Tank Pads is a nice THICK material like the original. Not a flimsy, thin material.
Click on the the link in my sig below to see the full size pads. Easy and inexpensive shipping for the strips via USPostal Priority Mail.

Funny! I just recalled the other thread from memory. Searching 'gas tank insulation', the above thread shows as result number 2, while this thread is result number 1.
I'm not bustin' your balls, just stating fact. It's not that big of a deal.
My reply from the other thread was to use a thick, dense closed-cell foam. Won't soak up any water or gas and conforms pretty well to any surface. This can be purchased from most linen/hobby stores, is frequently used in upholstery shops and is also used for sound deadening.
royalplum67 Mar 31st, 10, 12:14 PM :(All of the above answers will work, but be sure you check the tank for leaks before installing. My DIY tank had a seam seal leak at the top that stunk my entire garage up all winter. Also the seal around the sending unit was not the best. It will save you alot of work down the road to check it first.
