: Quarter Panel Adhesives

I know that I'm looking at replacing one Quarter Panel, possibly both. My question is about using the adhesives (like SEM, 3M, etc.)

Does anyone have any experience with any of them, and any preferences?

How much will I need (tubes) to do the Quarter?

Any help is appreciated.

thanks

What my guy uses is 3M 08115 panel bonding adhesive. Sorry i haven't used it yet, that what he told me to get. He's been a body guy for 25 years he should know.

Any idea how much I'll use/need? I'd hate to be in the middle of putting one of the quarters on and run out of it.

Try to send a PM to Brian here on TC, username MARTINSR
He is a wizard and I believe did some great tests with panel adhesives. He'll have the answers you're looking for...

Buddy of mine uses the 3m stuff all the time, he swears by it. Suppose to be the best. It`s the stuff in the container that squeezes out 2 parts at the same time..epoxy stuff.

in general 1 tube will do 1 larger panel.clean the sides to be bonded on the quarter and the car.i used 3m panel bond adhesive and sell it also on ebay.it has small beads in it so that when compressed it does not squeeze the material out,it requires a gun that is pricey,i heard of guys pushing the material out on a mixing board but dont recommend it.you will need to weld the sail panel and the rear of the panel as it recommends.if you had access to a resistance welder such as a pro spot, you can also weld bond the panel.i have a electron welder that i have done this with but does not have the setting.sem makes a version as well, good luck:)

I have used both 3M and SEM and can tell you they are structurally unbelievably strong. I didn't use mine on my quarters except for the bottom where the rocker meets. The nice thing is if you need to remove a bonded panel just apply some heat and it releases fairly easy. I used primarily for my door skins and various seems.

We use 3m 8115 at or shop and they swear by it. They would put a whole car together with it if they could as it is faster. I'm not a big fan. Why is a car spot welded together??? To allow for flexing between the spot welds. otherwise if a car was completly glued together metal would soon start cracking in spots. I am not saying the stuff does not have its place but I would not completly glue a whole quarter on. Wheelwells yes, door jambs and trunk lips no.

The real question IMO is what do you have locally and does your jobber have loaner guns?

The applicator guns for these glues are NOT cheap, 3M's gun is pushing 300 bucks. The gun I have for fusor is in the 50 dollar range.

Ive used 3M, fusor, duramix, and SEM. All will work just fine as the best is a matter of opinion. At one time, Fusor was the only company with a glue capable of meeting the Big Three's bonding requirements.
3M came out with I believe 8116 in order to meet these requirements because 8115 could not.

The last time I read any domestic manufacture's guidelines to panel bonding all recommended against bonding at sail panels, door jams, and around tail lamps unless weld bonding was present at the factory. In order to weld bond you need about a 15K spot welder.

Personally I would NEVER fully bond a panel on and most certainly NEVER bond a panel at a non factory seem.

There is a cheaper source for the gun... autobody toolmart has a hand operated unit here $36.99 :

I got the gun and a few of the automix 8115 adhesive tubes from them. Gonna be trying it out real soon on my quarter install. Thanks to the confidence I have gained from reading this forum. Thanks !
