MSD 8531 Gear
MSD 84661 Magnetic pickup
MSD 84335 Cap and rotor
MSD 8627 Reluctor
I can get everything above for around a hundred bucks is there anything else that should be replaced or inspected to make sure its rebuildable? Maybe I should just buy a new Summit one for $180.00. Any and all opinions are welcome. Thanks

My combo
70 Nova
BBC 496
stroker crank 4.25
10.2 compression
ultradyne hydraulic roller 245/253 @ .050 650/650 lift 110 lc
850 holley DP
Team G single plain
Dart 310cc aluminum heads 2.25 1.88
Th400 3500 stall

Currently running MSD 85551 Mechanical advance that I have locked out. It has now taken a crap and want some opinions on if I should go with a vacuum advance model or as stated above rebuild what I have.

Did you test your distributor to make sure that the magnetic pickup is actually bad?

The reluctor never goes bad and can be cleaned up lightly on a wire wheel.

The distributor gear can also be put back on unless it is damaged.

I have yet to see an 8555-1 go bad. Mine is 20+ years old and still works fine ( the old rinite/plastic base model)

It's easy enough to test, let me know if I can help.

No I have not tested the magnetic pickup yet. This was a used unit that came with the car as a spare part. I have been useing it but I'm thinking it hasnt been working as it should. The reluctor was rusted pretty bad so I took it apart and blasted it. I put a Summit cap and rotor which they said would fit but I just realized it was cocked and sticking up on one side approx 1/16". Now the reluctor is rusted again and the brass termanals have some arching marks at the very bottom of the contacts. Can you tell me of any quick pickup tests I can do its currently out of the car. Thanks

No, but I think an MSD cap and rotor, clean up the reluctor and you should be good to go. I think the pickup, either it will work or it won't. I have the 85551 in my car and it serves my purpose just fine.
