You don't say what year Chevelle but I can tell you that I have 15X8 Wheel Vintiques SS wheels on my 70SS with 4.5" back spacing with P275 60R tires and they fit quite nicely. There may be another inch or so of clearance but I think you would be pushing it with that size tire and a 9" rim width.

15X9's??? That sounds like an oddball width. The Summit catalog doesn't even list Wheel Vintque wheels in 9" width. Actually the only manufacturer listed in Summit at a quick glance that lists 15X9's is Centerline. I would say stick with 15X8 as you can get plenty of tire on that if it is being used mainly as a street car. Just my $.02

http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif oops...just realized from your other post that you have a 69. I stand by what I posted above. I think the 9" wheel will be pushing it unless you go with a P255 tire. The BFG tire width of P275 is 8.9" and the P255 is 8.2" so you pick up .7" back of clearance of the 1" you took away...it may work but I think it would be closer than needed, especially when the wider tire with the narrower rim (15X8) fits like a glove...with 4.5" bs

Dear Robert...I appreciate your efforts to help. I purchased some Vintique wheels at NPD Detroit about 5 years ago. I was pretty enthusiastic about a builder I had at the time. Nothing ever came of it and I sold the car. I was going to get some new tires and put the new wheels on my car this spring. I got my wheels out to measure. Looks like I bought two 8 " width and two 9" width wheels. Now we both know what I was thinking at the time. I just may have stuck myself with a couple 9" rims that I can't put anywhere. Dunno what their policy is on exchanging brand new 5 year old parts! Could be interesting. Okay I just remeasured everything...sure enough two are "nines". I recall I was making and exchange at the time. I had ordered a bunch of GM sheet metal ( 2 fenders and 2 quarters ) and then discovered GM sold them, and cheaper. Worst comes to worst these "nines" will be offered in the For Sale area. Not the worst mistake I have ever made. Incidentally, if anyone has ever mounted "nines" successfully, please let me know. Thanks R. B.

Your very welcome...hope things work out.

I am surprised there is not anymore activity on your post. There are enough 68 and 69 owners out there that have different tire combo's on their car. It is a shame the search function isn't working or you might find something on this. I thought I remember reading a while ago that somebody put 15X10's on the back of a Chevelle (not sure what year)with 5.5" back spacing and that would put the outside of the equivalent tire width the same as your 15X9's. I am not one to push the envelope on tire and rim size because I am just a cruizer and not a racer. I got enough rattles and issues with both my Chevelles so I don't want to have to deal with tires rubbing on large bumps or hard turns so I tend to be a little more conservative than others on this board when it comes to tires and rims.

Unfortunately this board does not get the traffic as much as the Tech board. I know it is frowned upon to post a tire question over there but an apology up front might take the edge off.

Good Luck,

Mytmouse
