Did the 67 SS396 come standard with seat belt retainer clips bolted into the center console to hold the seat belts in place or is this an add on that screws up the clean look of the center console between the bucket seats?

Earlier cars (up though at least 12A cowl tag date, that I know of) did not have the clips. Later cars did. I do not know exactly when the change occurred, except that it was after 12A.

Also, once the clips were added, they were used on all console cars. Did not matter if it was an SS or a Malibu, and did not matter if it was a standard belt car or a Deluxe belt car.

Another riddle we sometime have to put to rest

JEff & Mike:
Thanks. I have to do more research on cowl tag date so I can determine where mine fits. Is there a place to buy replacements for these clips. Mine look pretty wore on side face. Almost don't want to take seat belts off as they look better than the clips do sitting there.

I will review my cowl tag date and let you know what I find.

My car has the original console with no holes in it for the clips and I'm a late April car with standard belts.

My cowl date is 5A, which I believe means 1st week of May, 1967.

It was stated that up until 12A cars did not have these seat belt 'clips' attached to the console, only after that Cowl Date did seat belt reatiner clips get installed.

Does this mean that 66 & 67 SS396 Chevelles did not have seat belt retainer clips since production would have already ceased in 1st week of December 1967 on both those models?

12A refers to the first week of December 1966. Model year production for 1967 began in Sept 66 & ended in July 67. Jeff was saying that the seat belt clips didn't appear prior to December 66, not December 67.

No 1966 Chevelles had the clips, but '67s should have had them sometime after the first week of December '66 according to Jeff. Does that mean all of them did? Probably not, but they wouldn't be incorrect either way.

I believe an 05A 67 should have the seatbelt clips. Especially if your car appears to have the original console and the clips are already there. ;)

I have had two original 11E 67's cars without the clips, and two original 12A 67's without the clips. 3 of these are standard belt cars and one is a deluxe belt car. I had an original 05C 67 that did have the clips with standard belts. So the clips came into production sometime between 12A and 05C. (or 05A if your car has its original console)

We need all the owners of unrestored original cars to let us know their cowl tag dates and whether they have the clips or not, and we can pin this down!
