View Full Version : front sway bar from 79 trans-am
dc_malibu May 4th, 03, 12:05 AM At my local boneyard today I ran across a 79 trans-am.What caught my eye was the large front sway bar.Anyone know if this bar would fit a 72? I could get it for around $60.00. Is that a good price? Also, car has all front disc parts still there including power booster and M/C and prop valve and spindles.Could I use any of this on my car? Thanks for any input. Don
72SSAbody May 4th, 03, 12:56 AM Don,
Grab that sway bar! Yes, it is a direct bolt on and your Chevelle/Elky will not be the same afterwards (in a good way!).
The disc spindles can be made to work but your stock drum spindles can also be made to work for discs as well. There is tons of info on stock disc swaps and tall spindle swaps, so you might want to perform a search and gather tons of useful info! :D
Good luck!

Ditto here too. Ours is the 1-1/8" bar from a Trans Am/Camaro.

Derek69SS May 5th, 03, 1:24 PM I picked up 1 1/8 and 1 1/4 sway bar at a local salvage yard for $30-35 each
Sounds kinda pricey to me, but still a lot cheaper than aftermarket.
dc_malibu May 5th, 03, 8:01 PM Well guys,I got it! Stopped back today to get the bar,and the front brakes and spindles were already gone.(since this past saturday) graemlins/angry.gif I'm glad I went back today. It came with everything;links, brackets and bolts.Gonna have to wait awhile to try her out though cause I,m in the first stages of a frame off resto.Maybe by next spring it will be done . Can't wait
64postie May 5th, 03, 8:31 PM Don: You will love that 1-1/4 bar on the car. It makes the car so much more stable in the corner's. I installed mine a few weeks ago an could'nt wait to try it out. Bring's the old velle into the 21st century. With the close ratio box, 1-1/2 lowering springs and disc brakes :D Ralph
Derek69SS May 5th, 03, 11:28 PM You may need to run different length end links to keep it from rubbing your tie-rods. I can't remember if it's shorter or longer you need, but with my 1 1/4" bar and lowered front end, I couldn't turn right so I put the stock bar back on. I have yet to try my 1 1/8 bar.
DarylH May 6th, 03, 1:53 PM You will probably have to lengthen the link ends. I had to with mine in order to prevent the tie rods from hitting the bar.
Enjoy, it will be a definite improvement!!
Chevello May 6th, 03, 5:40 PM I put one on my 71 and it just bolted right up.

elcamino72 May 6th, 03, 6:44 PM I used the endlinks for my Elky and the frame mounts for the Firebird that I got my bar off of. I ordered new rubber and I was on the road. I got my bar for $25. The owner of the yard (real nice street rodder) asked me what it was worth to me, I said $25 and he said, go take it off. smile.gif
You'll love what that bar does to your handling. It was one of the best things I did to my suspension, next to the 12.7:1 quick ratio power steering upgrade (off of a 1992 Caprice 9C1 (police package))
