My 66 SS 396 with an M-20 transmission is hung in reverse. The shifter is in neutral and will go thru the gears. However, when the clutch is engaged it is in reverse. If you shift to a forward gear, the engine stalls. Does this sound like a linkage problem or is there something more? The transmission has been gone thru and rebuilt and has no miles on it. It has gone in and out of reverse before and did not hang up. The shifter and linkage are not new.

Yes ,sounds like a linkage adjustment issue.

Disconnect the shifter and have someone step on the clutch. See if you can turn the shift forks on the trans with a wrench. If it goes in and out of all gears easily, it's the shifter.

It's the shifter or linkage, just crawl under the car and knock the reverse arm back to neutral. Then check all your shift linkage bushings and if they're bad replace and readjust your shifter. You have slop somewhere, you just have to find it.
