Went to a neighboring town about 35 miles away for a funeral this past Saturday.
Saw a chevelle sitting beside a warehouse with a For Sale sign. The wife and I decided to check it out.
69 Chevelle SS and the trim tag has 72 for paint code.
Called the guy a while ago and he stated that there is still some of the original orange showing in hideaway places.
Car is red now. Car looks good from 10 ft away but has paint chips around the hood and fenders. 4 speed equiped.
Interior has been done in black crushed velvet material. LOL NOM 454. It is a complete driving car.
The guy couldn't believe that I knew some info on Chevelle's. Locals have all told him it is a Malibu due to the 136 code and all kinds of falacies. :noway: He wants to get together later.
Told him I couldn't afford another right now. I may get pictures and post them for anyone else looking.
He wants $14,800 for it but seemed to want to talk.
Cars are out there and show up for sale every once in a while.
Now.....to get the price right.

Pricing it at $14K + tells me he knows more about it than he has let on. Not likely you are the first to inquire but that does keep it from being worth looking into.
Nice to to see someone willing to share something with others though.
Never know when that Easter Egg you open up may have the money in it.

That is not correct about 136 VIN code. It was used on SS396, too.
the books states 136 is a Sports Coupe Model. In 68 they had used sperate VIN code.

Oh, he knows what he has. He is just used to talking to others that either don't know what they are talking about or trying to talk him into the fact that the car is not an SS.
We got along real good after he saw/heard that I knew what the car was and agreed with him.
Didn't mean for a WIW post to show up......I just started this post to converse about finding cars out there in the world.
Since the post is in WIW, I will see if the guy that owns it wants me to post some pics for him.
Make for an interesting discussion as it always does.

Sounds like a throwback to the late 70s or early 80s with a crushed velvet interior. Value? As I often say, there is no such thing as absolute value in this world. You can only estimate what a thing is worth to you and somebody else. Depending on mechanical condition it may turn out to be a good buy for someone.

the books states 136 is a Sports Coupe Model. In 68 they had used sperate VIN code. The books? What books are you referencing? Reread it/them again. 136 is a Malibu series, the sport coupe is either body style 17 (in 1966 & 1967) or body style 37 (all other years). The 136 Malibu came in a variety of body styles, 2- and 4-door sedans, convertibles, several wagons, etc., not just a Sports Coupe. ;)
From 1966 through 1968 the SS396 was a separate series from the Malibu, that's true. But, being a 138 VIN doesn't necessarily indicate an SS396 in 67 & 68 since the Concours wagon was a 138 VIN car as well. Additionally, 1968 was the only year for the SS396 El Camino as a separate series - 13880.
And, FWIW the 65 model year Malibu SS was a separate series from the Malibu with a 137 or 138 VIN since the Malibu SS could be ordered with an L6 engine as well as a V8 but only in the sport coupe or convertible.
When the SS Equipment package became an option in 1969, for 1969 only, it could be ordered on the 13637 coupe, 13667 convertible, 13680 pickup AND the 13437 300 Deluxe hardtop and 13427 300 Deluxe 2-dr sedan. In 1970 the SS396 and SS454 were relagated to the Malibu sport coupe, convertible, and pickup. In 1971 & 1972 the SS was no longer engine specific and could be ordered with any optional V8 meaning the 350-2, 350-4, 402-4 and 454 and, again, only in the Malibu sport coupe, convertible and pickup. FWIW, the 138 VIN series continued as the Concours wagon, Concours Estate wagon, as well as the 13857 Monte Carlo.

Yes on the pics, I'm curious which flavor of shag carpet was used with the crushed velvet seats. I'll bet 2-tone orange or deep purple.
