View Full Version : What's the best way to eliminate wheel hop?
nebhusker Nov 21st, 99, 8:09 PM Hi all! I have a 68 Chevelle Concours that was originally a 307 but now contains a 427 putting out about 425 hp. The only rear end change I have made is a swap to big block springs (oh yeah, and a 12 bolt w/ 3.55's). I am getting considerable wheel hop and want to eliminate it, as well as improve traction. I have a set of Lakewood bolt-on ladder bars still in the box but after reading some of the posts it sounds like they might be my worst option. This car is mainly for the street so I'd also like a decent ride. Here's the list of options I'm considering:
1 - the Lakewood ladder bars I already have
2 - Traction...Action coil spring bars
3 - Southside Machine lift bars
4 - No-Hop traction bars
5 - Hotchkis rear suspension package
Please help me make this decision!! Thanks!
swild Nov 21st, 99, 9:57 PM The first thing to do is get boxed rear control arms, the hi - po braces that stiffen the entire axle/frame/suspension, and upgrade to polygraphite bushings; these are available from Year One and PST among other supliers. This setup should go a long way to solving the problem. Also make sure your springs/shocks are correctly installed.
Hope this helps
Steve
Larry Nov 22nd, 99, 6:48 AM The problem is the rear end geometry. You could probably find a few dozen posts on this subject if you did a search. In any case, the best bang for the buck would be the No-Hop bars (they raise the upper control arm mounting points).
Bob Tiley Nov 22nd, 99, 7:59 AM Boxed lower control arms with polygraphite bushings and No-Hop bars up top, doing either one of these would probably solve your wheel hop.
RatPowr Nov 22nd, 99, 10:22 AM With the no-hop bars does it replace the upper control arms or just relocate the moutning point. I am thinking about adding those ( I have jegster adjustable upper control arms now)

Jeffs 68SS Nov 22nd, 99, 2:41 PM Hey Neb, I have a 68SS, and live in the Omaha area. I used a kit from malibu performance, and let me tell you it works great. The whole kit consists of tubular upper and lower control arms w/ urathene bushings, shocks, and anti-hop bars. Easiest way to install this kit is by removing the rearend from the car, as you need to drill a couple holes in the webbing on the pumpkin to install the anti-hop bars.
I was running a ladder bar set-up on my car before, but road very rough and still had some wheel-hop. This new system is much better ride wise and no more wheel hop.
Bob West Nov 22nd, 99, 9:34 PM put an air bag in your right rear coil spring, I have a 72 malibu w/461 ci BB in it,I dont have boxed control arms or any of the before mentioned items, mine does not wheel hop at all....28psi in the right air bag, a little over 5 in the left one , it works for me http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

BAD415 Nov 24th, 99, 1:33 PM I put No-Hop bars on my 65 Malibu. You can use the stock or aftermarket arms. It changes the pinion angle quite a bit. I had to jack up the front of the pig to get it to line up with the uppers. I dont have any wheel hop at all and when I launch, it pulls the rear of the car down even on both sides.
BAD415 Nov 24th, 99, 1:35 PM Hey Jeffs. Can you send me a link to the Malibu place you mentioned? Thanks
