I have a 1967 SS 396, The rear end in a 1967 measures from Flange to Flange 54 1/2". Now I know the 1968 rear end measures 55 1/2" correct? Here's where I'm puzzled, I pulled the axles out of my rear end, Brought them with me to this rear end shop to buy new one's. They gave me 1967 axles, But they were shorter than the one's I pulled out. The one's I pulled out were the length a 1968 rear end uses. I thought maybe the guy who I bought the car from installed the wrong axles so I bought the 1967 axles. I tried them and they were too short, I then went back and got the 1968 length, They fit just right. How is this possible? I know my rear end or atleast I think its a 1967 rear end, I measured it and it was 54 1/2" Anyone care to answer or help me on this one?

Hey Pete, I'll try and help you out. I don't know if it's a 10 bolt or 12 bolt but the axle shaft length on a 67 10 bolt is 29 33/64, on a 12 bolt it is 29 9/16. The axle shaft on a 68 10 bolt is 30 5/32 and a 12 bolt is 30 1/8. The actual measurements from axle tube flange to axle tube flange on a 67 is 54 1/4 and a 68 is 55 1/4. The measurements between the centerlines of the spring seats on a 67 are 35 1/16 for both the 10 and 12 bolt. On a 68 it is 34 31/32 on both a 10 and 12 bolt. You can also look at the build date of the rear. Not the axle tube code. Look at the back of the rear as if it was on the car. At the bottom left side where it looks like a triangle there will be a build date. This will tell what year rearend you have. Look for this build date, the letter will represent the month, the next numbers will represent the month and the next will be the year. I sure hope this helps you out. Let me know what you find out.

Dropped you a rely to your hot mail account. I'm going to check the length of the axle I pull out of there. The rear end is a 12 bolt and does measure 54 1/4 though. I'm going ot check the number below and get back to you on that one. Thanks for the info, Much appreciated!! By the way "Tom's Differentials" Has really heavy duty rear end components for street and strip and they are supposed to be way better than Moser stuff. I bought my axles for $230 with tax and they are street/strip axels, Pretty beefy!!!!!!! graemlins/hurray.gif
