Hi guys,I am getting ready to convert my 4 drum no power brakes to power front disk brakes. I am not going to buy a kit or go with the tall spindle thing. For now I am just going to convert to the original disk set up for a 71. The snag I have run into so far is that no local parts stores carry spindles and the only ones I can find are around 200 or so each. I was hoping that my fellow TC's can help me out with out having to make a trip to a scrap yard. I'm on a budget and I have found all the other parts for about $350 but if I have to spend another 400 just on spindles that will put the conversion out of my reach right now. So any help, comments, incites, or criticism is welcomed

If you have everything else, including the backing plates and caliper brackets, you can make disc spindles from drum spindles by cutting down the center boss.

how good / safe is that John? If it's not bad then I just might do it

Disc spindles were originally cast as drum spindles. The center raised boss was already machined down. All you are doing is machining it down to the same depth as a machinist did on disc spindles. Until Chevy redesigned the spindles on Chevelles in 1973, that's what they did. I've had 2 sets done already and you can't tell them from an original disc spindle.
With a little hunting you can still find nice drum spindles out there. Easier to get them cut ahead of time and ready to go. Save your old ones as emergency spares.

Another option is Sardeson Racing. They have new spindles. Most likely cheaper than the resto places.
