I'm in the process is purchasing new tires on my 66 SS Chevelle with a 3:73 posi because it appears that the tires just spin when I accelerate quickly. My friends have advised me that I need a taller tire? I have 15x8 rally wheels with a 4.5" backspace. What size tire do you guys recommend? I would like to go as wide as I can on the rear and with out rolling the lip? Thanks!

If you have the correct rear-end in your car a 275/60-15 looks the great on those cars. Plus they are 28" tall to help with your 3.73 gears.

When I had 15's on my '66,I also had the 275/R60,no problems with clearance(4 1/2 bs). However, there was no problem smoking and spinning those tires. Since I have gone to the 17's,I get much better handling and traction with my stock suspension and brakes. I used the same backspacing as the 15's(4"frt.-4 1/2"rear),but the tire sizes are 235/45/R17,frt.,255/45/R17,rear. The finished diameter are close to an inch of the original tire size, which were the 7.75X14. With the posi .331 rear, at 60mph,I am running 2350 rpm. Check my link...Bob

Terrific car!
Where did you get your redline tires?
Are they Diamond Back redlines,
& if so, what Brand/Model of tire?
Coker does not have anything bigger
than a 235-70 in a 15"-redline radial.
Thanks very much! :beers:

I am running 275/60R15's on the back of my 66 and when I change to 4.5" BS I won't have any more problems with the tire rubbing the wheel opening molding so you should be good to go. At 70 MPH I am running 2050 RPM with 3:50 gear & 700R4 trans.

Yes DB tires bot them back in about 2005 when building car ....... I had them grind off all the markings on sidewall so sidewalls are smooth ......so no brand etc but I beleive they were made by firestone .... they did have a name DBII radial or somethng like that on thier website but pbly changed to somemthing different by now
