Hello, I have a 67 Malibu 283 with manual steering. I'm trying to convert it to power steering. I bought the brackets on e-bay. They have no numbers on them. They fit the engine fine. One bracket is v-shaped and mounts to the front motor mount bolt and the two 3/8" holes next to the timing cover and has the slotted hole for adjustment. The other one cradles the pump and also mounts to the two holes by the timing cover. I got a pump from Autozone (part # 6088). The pump fits the brackets fine, but puts the pulley shaft into the fan shroud and fan. The engine compartment looks stock to me, with a short water pump, no accessory bolt holes in the heads, alternator on the drivers side, etc. The nose of the pump extends out about 3 1/2 inches from the reservoir. Another thing I noticed is this car has a 3 inch sheet metal tunnel between the core support and the radiator. It puts the radiator very close to the motor. It looks stock, but I'm not sure. It seems like if I took out this tunnel, mounted the radiator to the core support and put a spacer on the fan it would work. If I had a picture of this area of the engine compartment it would answer a lot of questions. I make a living as a mechanic and I'm not stupid, but this really baffles me. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I just went through the same thing with my 65. The spacer youre talking about is factory. I removed mine and mounted the radiator to the core support, it gave me a ton of extra room. Are you sure the brackets are from your year and does the pulleys line up fine? If thats all good then I would just remove the spacer if originality is not a issue. If you want I can look for a engine pic and email it to you. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty sure the brackets are right. They place the pump very close to the motor and the pump placement looks perfect. There just isn't any room between the motor and shroud / fan. Now that I hear that someone has already done it I'm sure that's the way to go. Thanks a lot!

Hey BIGMOE65, I hate to be a pest, but when you did this, I'm thinking you had to use longer radiator hoses. Did you use ones from another application? On other cars I have had replacement hoses that were too long & had to be cut to fit, but this was a hit-and-miss thing. Thanks again.

The hoses I used were for my year and yes they were long so I just cut them to fit. Also your not being a pest, your just being smart and making sure things go well the first time.
