Ok... I'm gonna go out on a limb here.

First of all I want the facts known. I am a Chevy man, always have been always will be. :D

But I am helping a friend with his project car. And yep it's a ford. graemlins/clonk.gif

We need help! The steering has 3/4 of a turn of play in it. I have adjusted the screw adjuster many times, no help. We just finished completely rebuilding the frontend, and every bushing, ball joint, and link was shot. Still have the 3/4 turn of play.

Must be a bad gear box. It's a 1966 Fairlane, with a long one piece rod for the steering wheel. It doesn't come off the box, no coupler or rag joint.

Who knows how to rebuild one? Should I try? Or just send it off somewhere? Or replace it? And from where?

Thanks guys,

Just another car nut trying to help another get his ride back on the road.

I had the same problem with my 63 Falcon Convert several years ago. (It was my first car, but I upgraded to the 65 SS shortly thereafter!)

I believe that the Falcon and Fairlane manual boxes are virtually identical. I originally tried to find rebuild parts, but became frustrated and ended up just replacing the thing. I was fortunate enough to find a low mileage unit in a local yard.
