: TH350 vs. CBC350????

I need to build a TH350 for my current project and I have a few cores to choose from. One of the transmissions has the universal bellhousing referred to as a CBC350 and this one is already on the bench. Is this trans the same internally as the older TH350's or are they weaker? I understand some units had extra clutches and wonder if this is the one I should rebuild or pass on it and pull out another core. The engine is nothing extreme, 350ish HP smallblock with a Hughes 3000 converter, 3.73 gears but the vehicle is fairly heavy: late 80's shortbox 2wd pickup.

Is there anyone here that can tell me if there's internal differences or if I should bail on the CBC350 trans? Thanks in advance, Bob

They are the same internally, they just have the universal Chevy/BOP pattern. The difference is between ones that were behind 6 cylinder vs. 8 cylinder vehicles. The latter had 5 clutch packs vs. the 4 of the 6 cylinder counterpart.

Thanks, I don't know if this CBC is a V8 or 6 cylinder trans. Anyway to tell from the exterior? I suppose I could just upgrade the clutches but trying to get away from having to hunt for extra hard parts or pulling another trans if possible. Bob

You gotta look inside. There are lock-up and non lock-up units. That's easy to spot, electrical connector above the shift shaft area and extra nubbin' on the input shaft. Convertors are not interchangeable.

This one doesn't have the electrical plug so I'm safe there. Is the case internally the same on all?
