: Anybody have their radiator recored?
webfoot Mar 19th, 10, 3:29 PM I have the original Harrison 4-row radiator out of my 68 GTO. The core is shot but the tanks are in good shape. I took it down to a shop in town and he quoted me $325 which I thought seemed reasonable. Does anybody have any experience with this?
troposcuba Mar 19th, 10, 3:32 PM had an old chevy C-10 pickup that ran hot all the time. re-cored the rad. never another problem (well except the telephone that jumped out in front of me and crushed the radiator).
elka Mar 19th, 10, 3:59 PM I was phone-estimated $3-400 for a recore of my Harrison. I ended up just changing out the old water with DI water, which brought my temp down, so I never had it done.
Bill Rose Mar 19th, 10, 4:05 PM I've had 3 or 4 Harrison rads recored. They all work fine. The price is higher than it was a couple yrs ago, but that's the going price these days, probably because the price of copper is so high.
webfoot Mar 19th, 10, 4:10 PM Thats what the guy said, was because of the raw material cost. He said $325 was "giving me a good deal" since he's had that core laying around so long. Seems OK to me because I will have one heck of a heavy duty radiator.
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Mar 19th, 10, 4:19 PM That's about right IMO
Mark66SS Mar 19th, 10, 4:31 PM I have had plenty of radiators recored . The Studebakers were not repo'd at the time some are now . As long as the tanks are good its just as good a new one.
davewho1 Mar 19th, 10, 5:09 PM I had mine recored last year. They straightened out the dents in my tanks (mostly) and it works great. Cost around $400. I just wish I'd had them leave it bare and painted it myself. ;)
rocks66ss Mar 19th, 10, 6:02 PM I had a Harrison radiator re cored last year, and it was right at $400.00
Thats what I did, had them leave it clean, and I painted it myself.
I just went and looked in my files, and it was $422.94 with tax.

czeto Mar 19th, 10, 6:16 PM That's what it goes for in NJ. I agree in telling them not to paint it and do it yourself. They paint mine and it looks like a blind person did it. Also make sure they do not toss your radiator tag.
704EVER Mar 19th, 10, 6:25 PM Jeremy, I just had a 4 row done down here for 400. I also opted to paint it myself, which they couldn't understand why I requested that they don't!;)
tdimasi Mar 19th, 10, 7:04 PM I've had two radiators re-cored. One in my '56/383 Chevy and another in a '66/455 GTO. In both cases the shop did so with "5 core" centers. Didn't cost any more and I got some more cooling efficiency. This was a few years ago. Don't know if this is still available.
JJ'65 Mar 19th, 10, 7:26 PM Had my Mopar recored six years ago; before copper prices took off. $186 including new filler neck and trans cooler. Worked great, but developed a pinhole leak in the top tank a year or so later. Easily fixed for $20.
One thing to think about: Its probably not going to last as long as it did the first time. Years and hundreds of thousands of miles and many heat/cool cycles take a toll on the brass tanks.
