i have a 72 malibu that failed inspection for front brakes. how much on average does it cost to get new drum brakes, i have only dealt with disc before.

Not that much more, even if your looking at replacing the wheel cylinders (as compared to calipers), Just go to your local auto parts store and I think you'll find that you can pretty much replace everything for @ 150.00 or less.
