: 700r4 advice
patmckinneyracing Mar 16th, 10, 11:06 PM Hey guys. Well I just took my 700r4 to a shop, finally after dealing with backstabbing shop owners. Just as a refresher the one I have is an 85' version of the 700r4 and I believe it is what is referred to as the second gen. I went to the local gear shop called Nogalitos gear that is the biggest supplier down here for transmissions. This is what I bought:
-Precision heavy duty rebuild kit
-13 vein oil pump/kit (stock one is a 7 vein pump)
-Corvette servo
-Transgo shift kit
Bought all this stuff for $247 and has all the bells and whistles to make this thing beefier than what it ever has been. Do you guys think this setup will holdup to the 380hp and 425lb. The shop I took it to is going to charge me 250$ labor and after I showed them pics of the malibu, I got the response "Were going to make this one special" lol. So do you guys think these parts will hold up to 380hp and 425lb.?
Is there a way to make a 700r4 a full manual valve body? I would rather prefer shifting that leaving it up to a switch.
jakeshoe Mar 16th, 10, 11:47 PM You are missing some components that will be needed.
An improved sun shell, a good forward sprag assembly, an improved band, boost valves, chromoly pump rings and heavy pump slide spring, and improved 3-4 clutches.
You'll also likely need a new reverse input drum.
I run a performance transmission shop and I spend about $500 in parts at my cost to build a 700-R4 and that's IF the core doesn't need any major hard parts.
patmckinneyracing Mar 17th, 10, 12:08 AM Well let me run to the shop tomorrow and hope they have not already rebuilt the thing
jakeshoe Mar 17th, 10, 12:17 AM Also keep in mind the TransGo Shift kit is not for performance use, it is a problem solving kit, you need a TransGo 700 2-3 kit.
It can make the trans full manual if so desired as well.
patmckinneyracing Mar 17th, 10, 12:39 AM The Transgo kit 2-3 is the one I have right now

Jake, I wish I had bought a 700r4 from you. I went with TCI and I am REALLY unhappy with them and their trans

patmckinneyracing Mar 17th, 10, 7:47 PM Here's the update guys. I went to the shop today and luckily they had not taken it apart or anything yet. So I went back over to nogalitos gear and got everything I would possibly need, minus the planetaries. This is what I got before:
-Precision heavy duty rebuild kit
-13 vein oil pump/kit (stock one is a 7 vein pump)
-Corvette servo
-Transgo shift kit
After going back to nogalitos this is what I came out with:
-The "beast" sunshell
-Brand New TV cable
-Lockup solenoid
-.500 boost valve
-Larger intermediate/low return valve
-Reverse input drum
-Forward sprag assembly
I told the guy to keep it an automatic and do not swap over to a full manual trans. So this thing should be good to go. I spoke with the manager at nogalitos and asked him about the alto red 7 and 8 clutch packs for the 3-4 gear. He said that the 6 clutches would be plenty for what I'm doing and that I would really only need the alto reds if I were going upwards of around 550 to 600lbs.
jakeshoe Mar 18th, 10, 12:05 AM Alto reds aren't the clutch to use in the 700 3-4 pack. I wouldn't even consider them for that application.
6 pack is OK, it will handle some decent power if the hydraulics are right. I run a 7 or 8 pack on most of my builds for the 700s.

So are there 2 different TransGo kits for the 700? What does shift kit do?
clean7t Mar 22nd, 10, 12:23 AM What is the story with the reds?

Reds seem to be marginally better than a stock tan clutch as far as heat capacity. About the same as far as grab (co-efficient of friction). Not worth 3 times the cost of a tan and not adequate for the already problematic 3-4 clutch pack in a 700.
clean7t Mar 23rd, 10, 11:21 PM What do you typically use and or reccomend then Jake? Just curious. I know that I originally had the Z-pack in mine but when the forward piston blew up the 3-4 was changed with i believe Reds.
jakeshoe Mar 23rd, 10, 11:23 PM I use a carbon based clutch in the 3-4's.
