: GM replacement rear parking brake cables

Hi there,

I'm in process of replacing my parking brake cables and have some serious concerns on what was sold as a GM service replacement part for the rear cables. The replacements are not clipped to the frame where they connect to the intermediate cable. Instead, they have tangs that spread out to prevent the cable from backing out.

The thing I'm not happy with is that newer tangs style doesn't postively secure the cable. It is quite loose in that hole where the old clipped cables were held tight. Granted, this may be a moot point since the general tension of the entire parking brake cables as a functioning unit would hold the rear cables in place.

Does anyone else have any experience with these replacement cables, good or bad?

thanks.

All the new cables are like you described. I spread the tangs out a little more so the cable can't come out. I'll continue to look for NOS cables. BTW. The cables described on countless ebay ads, as NOS,are replacement type cables. Not the original cables... They are deceiving people who believe their crap. The replacement cables work fine. Just not correct for some of us. If you need repro parts, get them from Ground-up.

Hey Bill,

Thanks for the reply. I'm seriously debating whether to send my one un-opened cable back to Year One and get something that fits like it should. On the other hand, my car is a driver and is getting restified where needed, not restored.

'Tis better to have the replacement parts now and have parking brakes then to wait for the correct ones and have no parking brakes at all.

As always with Ebay it's buyer beware, but you make a point that is good to reiterate.

Thanks again with post. Where in Jersey are you? I'm in Hudson County.

You probably didn't need to get them from Year One, I bought mine from the local parts house for my 64 and they are as you described.

I just bought a set from Ground up and they are the original style. They were the stainless steel ones, though. They were drop shipped from the manufacturer so I can look at the box to see who makes them and you can see if the steel ones are original type or not if you want.
