I am in the process of rebuilding my front end & I completely disassembled the rotor/spindle/backing plate assemblies. on the spindle there is a small pliable ring similar to gasket material that I would like to replace. No one knows what I'm talking about. Anyone have any idea where I can get replacements or if this part is necessary?

I know exactly what you're talking about. It's between the backing plate and spindle surface, right? I saved the ones off the tall spindles I got from the junkyard. Even so, I too would like to know if these can be purchased? Maybe a local GM dealer would be able to help.

Click on the following link. I never purchased anything from them, I just like the info I get from the drawings. I believe the part you're talking about is on page 22, Part 8A - $0.45.

I used thermostat gaskets after cutting out the bolt holes. Don't know the make, model, or engine the gaskets were intended for. Took a spindle to the local auto parts and we matched it to the gasket.

Chevy dealers stopped stocking the backing plate gaskets in 1985. I'll go with the thermostat gasket idea. Thanks for your help!

How important are they to have installed? We just finished putting my dad's LS5 back together and did not bother to put them back in...I'm told that they are there to cut down on noise??? Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike

I have eliminated the tin dust shields so I have not needed the gasket. A lot of new cars do not use the dust shields.
