On our chevelle, the tag that gives all the info on the firewall about the car, it is painted black. What do you suggest we use to take the paint off, so the tag is back to the "original"? Hard to read all the letters/numbers. Thanks.

Penny most likely it should be black, taking a photo of it will assist you in reading all the numbers. You can remove it (old paint) with lacquer thinner and a rag with repeated wiping. I would not use any type of gel stripper as I believe they are some type of aluminum. If your under hood area is detailed and painted nicely you will need to be careful with surrounding finishes.
Good Luck......

It is supposed to be painted black. If you remove the paint, you quite possibly set yourself up for people questioning whether the tag is real and original.

I would not remove the paint.

Thanks for your help. We won't take the paint off. This restoring stuff is a learning experience. We will take a picture and go from there. Penny:beers:

You can hold a piece of paper over it and drag a crayon over it to get a tracing that might be easier to read.

If there are several layers of paint on the trim tag, which makes it difficult to read, it's a simple process to correct it.

I put several layers masking tape around the sides of the tag, then use a small 1/2" brush to apply paint remover. You may have to do it a couple times to cut thru the layers of paint. Then just clean off the bubbled up paint with oooo steel wool. Paint remover won't hurt aluminum. After the paint is removed, remove the masking tape, clean the tag with lacquer thinner, re-mask the tag and spray a couple coats of satin black on the tag, but not so much, that it clogs it up this time.
