My starter is grinding on the flywheel at random. There is no patteren to it it does it when its hot cold after short drives after long drives totally random.

So I crawled underneath and saw that the holes where the bolts go through are cracked :(. So its time for a new starter.

What are things to look at when buying a new starter? I have a 383 with about 10:1 CR

Its a tight fit with my headers so I would like to look at getting a mini starter.

I know they're pricey, but I can't say enough good about my Tilton mini starter. I cooked a stock-type with the headers and a deal on a Tilton fell in my lap. Bye-Bye starter heat soak issues. Oh...and I'm also at 10:1 cr and it's well-suited for it.

Check out DB Electrical. They sell mini starters. I have 2 of them.

We've had a Delco mini starter on our L78 for at least 7-8 years, perhaps longer, and it works great.

Well I checked them out and I love the price!!!! I did a search on here about the DB starters and they seem to be a very good buy. many ppl on here are running them with zero issues since day one.

Im thinking of getting this one

It puts out plenty of power to turn over anything I would ever build. What do all of you think? Nice size and power level? I cant get over the price lol

I was looking more towards the mini because its a tight fit with my headers. I almost have to take off my headers to get the one thats in there out.

I went ahead and bought the same one today so hopefully I get it sometime this week.

My starter currently has 2 shims on it now. When I get this starter should I use 2 shims again?

Well I intalled the starter the other day and the power that little thing puts out is crazy! and it it much MUCH lighter then the OEM dinasour that I had on there lol. I forgot how big and heavy they are lol. Im Very happey with that little guy. Cheap to! 72 bucks to my door :)

updates? Still going strong? I am having heat soak issues (I think) and im worried that a mini starter wont be enough to fire up my engine, its a 350 11:1 comp with lots of little things done to increase powere. I had to put a big block starter on it to get it to crank over.

Mine has been fine. I have it on a 10:1 454. The mini starter puts out way more cranking power than the stock GM starter does.

My starter recently developed a crack in almost the same spot along the rear half of the housing, made an awful noise. I'm just curious on what could cause that? Never had any problems, then one day...POOF! Insights?

I am very happy with my dbelectrical PM300.

Seems like you already have it shimmed properly. I found that a 3/16" pin gage worked best to check mine. It took no shims and worked fine. I had the initial impressions that it should be shimmed at .125:

Either the distributor is carbon tracked and firing in the wrong order or it's too far advanced. The same thing happened to me. It took me a while to figure out it was the cap. I kept thinking it was the timing, but it was the cap. I broke 3 starters before I figured it out.

I bought the Meziere. Perfect. No more drag when hot. Spins my big block like a top.

Factory type starters need to have a factory brace on them to survive.
