: Offset cross shaft question

Ok, I'm sure this has been discussed previously, but I have performed searches and found nothing.

I need to know which way the offset needs to go on the upper arms. It seems to me that the offset should move the upper arm in to prevent the need for so many shims. The problem is that I have seen them installed in 2 cars the other way. Which way is correct?

I am rebuilding the front end on a 69 that didn't have offset shafts, but I am using 70 model control arms that came with the offset shafts.

Thanks for the input!

Really, the offset shaft can be used either way. It's purpose is to compensate for cars where the frame has rolled in towards the motor. When that happens to a certain extent, you can't get any shims in with the stock cross shaft. The offset shaft allows the arm to be further away from the motor without shims. THen it can be shimmed to spec.

I have mine installed the way you thought it should be. To reduce the number of shims. That's not what their intent is but I ended up with the shafts and thought it better to reduce the number of shims rather than increase it.

Isnt it stamped wheel side on the shaft? I've seen them stamped.

This means that if I install them as intended, I will need even more shims to get the alignment right. I think I will follow Tim's lead and install them backwards to reduce shimming.

Thanks for the input!
