I have a '68 Chevelle with 4 wheel drum brakes. Are the front and rear brake shoes interchangable, or different from each other? Need some front brakes and have a new set of rears that I could use if they are the same. I am a month away from changing to discs, but this is my daily driver and need to address a problem this weekend. Thanks.

Front drum shoes are wider than rears, so I wouldnt risk it. Diameter may also be different but I havent checked that. I think new shoes are only around $20, you could always throw a set of rears in the box as your trade in cores :D

Thanks, I'm not a chance taker when it comes to brakes. (says the guy with drums on a daily driver!) I'll just get some new ones and save these rears for when I need them.

As someone once said "If your engine fails, there you is. If your brakes fail, there you ain't."

You might consider going with Kevlar linings. They shorten braking distances and are less susceptible to fade. Their performance may even delay your upgrade to disks...(on 2nd thought...).
This from a guy with 4-wheel disks on his daily drivers and 4-wheel drums on his Chevelle.
